1. Those evil Dutchmen
I was in Aruba last week, it was crawling with Dutch military disguised as Jewish tourists. But I could tell because their accent was wrong, and they were sneaking bacon into their eggs when they thought nobody was looking.

2. I'm boycotting Edam cheese
I want to add, as a sign of my displeasure towards the Dutch, I decided to boycott Edam cheese. From now on I'll only eat Gouda in my morning cheese sandwhich

3. Why Shouldn't We Believe That This Could Be a Land Grab?
Why shouldn't we believe that Chavez's latest pronouncements concerning the ABC islands might be a pretext for a land grab? It's not like such things have been unknown, especially when disguised as so-called "decolonizations."

Certainly there have some egregious recent examples. The Indonesians' seizure of eastern New Guinea is one such example. So was the seizure of East Timor after the Portuguese military dictatorship was overthrown.

Certainly several governments have made no secrets of their own territorial ambitions. The Guatemalans have wanted to take over Belize for years. The Argentines made a spectacular grab for the Falklands and were thrown out by the British.

Nor would this be the first time that Venezuela had made such advances on Aruba, Curacao, or Bonaire. I stopped by a local museum in Curacao and vividly remember the photo of the Dutch naval cruiser dispatched by the Netherlands to discourage such a move.

When it comes to territorial realignments, I'd make no objections if they were done with the consent of the acquired territories. If, for example, the voters of Zimbabwe chose to be annexed by South Africa or if a majority of Guatemalans chose to be annexed by Mexico, or even if the majority of Kuwaitis had chosen to join Iraq (before Saddam Hussein sent in his troops) I would not be bothered.

If, on the other hand, the ABC islands were seized by force against the inhabitants' wishes, I would object, and I'd call it what it was--a blatant territorial land grab. I'd see no reason to cheer such a grab even if certain DUers have appointed themselves as Hugo Chavez's designated cheerleaders.

4. I think it's just another childish and manipulative tantrum
He knows the army wouldn't follow him in a real conflict. I think he's just trying to divert attention from the real internal issues and, maybe, slowly preparing the field for postponing next year's legislative elections.

6. Venzuelan hot air
It's just hot air. Chavez has a real problem with his mouth: he opens it too often, too long, to say the dumbest things. It just makes him sound crazy, and is one reason why his popularity is waning. Venezuela lacks the military power to attack anything, but if they did, they would probably point south east towards Essequibo, where they do have a much more viable claim. It's evident they won't tangle with Colombia, which has a much larger population base and a much more veteran and well trained army. And it sure as hell won't tangle with the Dutch - they're a NATO power. If Venezuela were to attack those islands, they would have the kitchen sink thrown at them.
