Lolita Lebrón, crusader for Puerto Rico independence dies

Interesting lady.

Capitol police hold Lolita Lebron and two others in custody on March 1, 1954, after they opened fire from the House gallery. (Associated Press)

Do Puerto Rico stories go in LatAm forum?? Guess probably not, being part of the United States. But culturally, probably yes.

1. Didn't know about this lady. Says she was arrested and jailed again at 81 protesting Vieques.
Wow.

So the U.S. has always seen Puerto Rico as a "spoil of war" after the Spanish-American War. Good grief. That must be why a gummint's nose is out of joint over Cuba, too. I've puzzled over why the two flags are exactly the same, only one has a red triangle and blue stripes, and one has a blue triangle and red stripes. Like the same limited artist created them both for a "twofer" sale.

The story about her defusing the rage when that man was tracked down, shot and denied medical treatment while he bled to death slowly was very interesting.

Found this photo of her:

While I was looking through the other pages near this photo, found the following photos I haven't seen before:

Frida Kahlo

Two vaguely familiar faces.

Thanks for the story. Very useful, good to learn.

Recommending.

2. California was a spoil of war too...
I have always thought Puerto Rico had it pretty good as a territory vs. independence or statehood. Best of all the fact we don't need passports to go there is a big sell for mainland American tourists to choose PR over Cancun.

5. US territory no passports and US dollars, English fairly widely spoken, however US prices too
so South America remains much more attractive in my book.

6. South America is much more expensive to travel to than
Puerto Rico and probably not for the same type of vacationers Puerto Rico is. I don't think many people are deciding: Puerto Rico or South America

Here in St. Louis people tend to go to Jamaica, Cancun, Dominican Republic, or Puerto Rico.
