Cuban TV says airline crashes with 68 aboard
(AP) – 44 minutes ago

HAVANA (AP) — A Cuban airliner flying from the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba to the capital crashed Thursday night with 68 people aboard, including 28 foreigners, state media reported. There was no immediate word on whether any survived.

The AeroCaribbean plane went down near the village of Guasimal in Santi Spiritus province, carrying 61 passengers and a crew of seven, state television said. It said 28 passengers were foreigners, but did not give a breakdown of nationalities.

At Havana's national terminal, relatives of those on board the plane were kept sequestered away from other passengers and journalists.

The newscast gave no details on what happened, saying only that the cause of the crash was being investigated.

2. Those old Russian planes have been running forever
I don't think they've had many accidents.

I'm sorry to hear this, so sad.

3. Glad you caught this. I missed it myself. Horrible to learn this happened.
First thing I thought of was another "exile" bomb.

Hope they can determine exactly what has happened.

Terrifying, and heartbreaking way to end all these lives.

11. What a contemptable post. You LOL at Cuban exile bombing campaigns?
What I think is that you don't know anything about Cuban exile bombing campaigns that included a mid-air bombing of a Cuban airliner killing all aboard.

IF you do know of this, then your post is a contemptable post.

I'm willing to cut you some slack on that, because I think you come over here to make shit up (again) - as demonstrated by many of your uninformed posts on Cuba.

4. Rescuers pulling bodies from Cuba plane crash
Rescuers pulling bodies from Cuba plane crash
– 17 mins ago

HAVANA (Reuters) – Rescue workers began pulling bodies from the burning wreckage of an Aero Caribbean plane that crashed in central Cuba with 68 people on board on Thursday after issuing an emergency call.

There were no reports of survivors. Aero Caribbean is a state-owned regional airline.

The Civil Aeronautics agency said there were 40 Cubans on board, including seven crew members, and 28 foreigners. The foreigners came from 10 countries.

A photograph on a Cuban government website showed flames rising from the shattered remains of the plane -- an ATR-72-212 twin turboprop built by ATR, a joint venture of Europe's EADS and Italian group Finmeccanica.

Rescuers had to use a bulldozer to plow through thick vegetation to reach the crash site near the town of Guasimal in Sancti Spiritus province, state-run media said.

14. Crashed Cuban plane trailed smoke, flames: Witnesses
Crashed Cuban plane trailed smoke, flames: Witnesses
Reuters November 5, 2010 5:13 PM

GUASIMAL, Cuba - A Cuban Aero Caribbean passenger plane trailed smoke and flames as it hurtled through the sky before crashing in a central province, killing all 68 people aboard, eyewitnesses told Reuters on Friday.

They said the twin-engined ATR turboprop was flying low and appeared unstable as the pilot struggled to keep it in the air before it veered down and smashed into the ground on Thursday near Guasimal in Sancti Spiritus province, 210 miles (338 km) southeast of Havana.

Of the dead, 40 were Cubans, and the remaining 28 foreigners from 10 countries. The foreigners, many thought to be tourists, were almost all South Americans and Europeans, and also included one Japanese.

Local residents heard the explosion and saw the flames from the air crash, the worst in Cuba in two decades, which shattered the tranquillity of the small rural town.
