Housing Minister quizzed over house-building timetables and projects

Housing Minister Ricardo Molina came under fire from opposition deputy, Ricardo Mardo, who declared that it would take 99 years to build the 2.5 million houses the government promised within a few years.

Mardo based his calculation based on the government's house-building record over 12 years.

Tongue-in-cheek, the Minister replied that he would not be around in 99 years but the Venezuelan revolution would and the housing deficit could only be solved under a socialist system.

Molina threw back the argument, stating that between 1959 and 1998 35,790 houses had been built a year compared to 1999 to 2010 when 25,857 houses in the public sector and 23,740 in the private sector were built.
