Honduran Carbon Emissions Project Is Evaluating EDF Contract Termination
Honduran Carbon Emissions Project Is Evaluating EDF Contract Termination
By Catherine Airlie - Apr 15, 2011 4:29 AM CT

An emissions-cutting project in Honduras is evaluating Electricite de France SA’s termination of a contract to buy carbon credits.

EDF terminated yesterday its involvement with the Aguan biogas project in Central America, after an environmental lobby alleged that the facility’s owner committed human rights abuses. The project is owned by Exportadora del Atlantico, a unit of Grupo Dinant.

“Our lawyers are currently in the process of evaluating” a letter from EDF terminating the contract, Roger Pineda, corporate treasurer at Tegucigalpa, Honduras-based Dinant, said in an e-mailed response to questions from Bloomberg News. “In order to terminate the contract, a document signed by both parties should be documented.”

CDM Watch, a Brussels-based lobby, said in a February report that the Aguan project, linked to palm oil production, had acquired land illegally and was responsible for killings of more than 20 people in the past year at the site.
