Venezuela to boost minimum wage by 25%AAP

President Hugo Chavez has announced a 25 per cent increase for Venezuela's minimum wage starting on May 1.

Chavez says workers will get a 15 per cent boost in pay at the beginning of May.

They will get the remaining 10 per cent rise on September 1.

The wage increase announced on Monday will benefit close to 3 million people, who will earn $A340 a month once the full increase is phased in.

Venezuela's food inflation trebles Latin American average


The high food prices hitting Venezuelan households exceed by far those in the rest of Latin American countries, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Between February 2011 and February 2010, food prices climbed 37.3 percent in Venezuela, while the Latin American average food inflation is 8.8 percent, based on a statement prepared by the FAO to disseminate its quarterly newsletter.

The Latin American countries with the highest annual inflation rates at the end of February were Venezuela, followed by Paraguay (17.1 percent), Bolivia (17 percent) and Argentina (10.6 percent), while inflation in Colombia, Mexico and Peru was below 5 percent.

Food inflation in Venezuela is due to a combination of factors including local issues such as currency devaluation and supply deficit, as well as global factors such as price hikes of imported products.

Nuevo salario mínimo cubre 96,9% de la canasta alimentaria

El ajuste del salario mínimo que el Presidente Hugo Chávez anunció anoche será insuficiente para cubrir por completo el valor de la canasta alimentaria.

La remuneración básica de 1.407,4 bolívares, que entrará en vigencia desde el 1 de mayo, permitirá costear 96,9% de la cesta de alimentos básicos que calcula el INE, y que para el mes pasado se situaba en 1.452,20 bolvares.
