RIO DE JANEIRO: The Brazilian government is beginning a gun buyback program that officials hope will take 500,000 weapons off the streets.

Officials say the program will allow people to turn in guns with no questions asked.

Beginning Sunday, the government will pay between $60 and $185, depending on the model and condition of the gun. The program ends in December.

Officials say a similar program in 2004 removed at least 300,000 guns from the streets.
