"Who decided the "Democratic" Donkey should be Eeyore?" asked a former Clinton supporter
Edited on Wed Jan-06-10 07:17 PM by Peacetrain
When I had coffee with a bunch of Democrats in the real world this morning.. ( we were workers in nearly everyone's campaign locally).. I had the great pleasure to find out that every single one of them is quite supportive of President Obama, and the battle our elected Democrats have been waging. We are very proud of them all!

We fought a hard campaign here in Iowa, and it was the first, and we had to contend with all the garbage being thrown (some by our own side) but in the end.. we all came together and have been together ever since.

We were laughing at some of the talking heads.. .. That some have moved from the fighting Dems.. to Eeyore, has us all scratching our heads.

3. Well wouldn't it make sense for him to be called Eeyore?! Donkey's make the Eeehaw sound.
Eeyore sort of works. Or I hear eehaw or yeehaw...but I can see hearing eeyore. or at least eeyaw.

I realized you had more important things stated but the eeeyore thing got my attention. It was like when I was watching Donnie Darko and they said that smurfs were asexual or something like that and it reminded me of the Smurfette and Romeo ep. Although it must be said they don't reproduce like regular humans.

4. You are right.. when you are sitting around, all of us understood it exactly..
I updated the op with "Democratic" in quotes (that is my add) because maybe it was one of those..you had to be there..things to get the full humor of what she said.

9. We were talking about the media and the purposeful distortion of
a story to make it a negative.. sometimes even when it is a positive thing.

12. It's the futility of left-of-center politics
Edited on Wed Jan-06-10 08:26 PM by liberalpragmatist
Not the actual futility - the perceived futility. Every single time a left-of-center government comes to power democratically - not just in this country, but others - its supporters proclaim that they have betrayed their supporters. Change is hard, because you run into established interests and there is inevitably going to be some compromise.

Every single Democratic president since FDR - and including FDR - was called a sellout and disappointment. FDR would have been pilloried by DU over his unwillingness to embrace Huey Long's "Save Our Wealth" platform and push for civil rights. Truman would have been blasted over his foreign policy, for failing to achieve any of the Fair Deal, and for reneging on his pledge to repeal Taft-Hartley. JFK would have been criticized for expanding Vietnam, for going slow on Civil Rights, for failing to get Medicare passed. LBJ would have been pilloried for Vietnam. Carter for deregulating the airline and trucking industries, for abandoning efforts to push universal health care, and failing to get much of his domestic agenda passed. Etc. Etc.

Now, that isn't to say that a left-of-center leader couldn't prove broadly disappointing. And it doesn't mean that they can't make mistakes or bad decisions. The problem is differentiating legitimate criticisms - and there are plenty you can make about Obama - from over-the-top, sky-is-falling, betrayal-hysteria.*

* No, not all critics of Obama fall into that category. Although I consider myself a supporter, I can understand why some people would feel broadly disappointed. I just disapprove of people constantly reacting to every snippet of information in the worst possible light.
