Not an apologist but an apology |
|
I'm not going to offer an explanation for a 3-year freeze.
Instead, I'm going to offer an apology to some people here whom I said were wrong about Obama because you may in fact have been right.

I'm a Democrat. Throw money at social problems and throw money at poverty.
I didn't get mad when we didn't get that.
But what we are getting is altogether something different.
And the apparent lack of desire to close the deal on healthcare (flawed as it is) made me withhold my usual benefit of the doubt.

6. Anger's a good thing when it's turned into action... |

So, let's get active, let's get even.
Obama said he couldn't do it alone, and I haven't forgotten.
It's turning out to be a bigger battle than I'd expected.
We have to push against members of congress, in our own fucking party!
We have to buy differently, boycott with conviction, do our homework.
And, most of all, we have to stay energized, energize others, and work together as much as we can.

Looks like I have to write my congressperson, Jackie Speier and ask her to oppose Obama's 3-year spending freeze.
Yikes.
And other good things as you suggest.

7. Don't worry it's just marketing |
|
One of those periodic "let's cut out waste in government" things that comes along every once in a while, whoever is president. It's just being called a spending freeze" because that's what they think the voters want to hear this time around.

10. Cut waste and shift budgets around. |
|
Clinton consistently cut spending under various names to balance the budget.

13. It's probably a smokescreen, but yeah I'll be annoyed |

if it isn't.
Being a research scientist, and depending on NIH and NSF grants, it could also kick my ass. But maybe it's nothing.

15. I understand an overall discretionary spending freeze too well unfortunately |
|
Like I said in a post in another thread, it's 1% better if they boost some programs that help people at the expense of ones that don't.
But after years of discretionary funding not keeping pace with inflation and outright cuts to many agencies, there just isn't enough to go around and we have a nation in dire need.
I don't know what else I could find out that would make all this okay.
And also, I used to give Obama the benefit of the doubt on a lot of things --but his backing away from health care in the aftermath of the MA election was a dealbreaker for me. No more benefit of the doubt.
And then comes this.
It's hard for me. Today I was thinking of posting how we are really all on the same side and to look to this board's postings on 11/4/2008.
But after this, I just didn't feel like it.
