Burr draws primary challenger
North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr is the latest Republican to draw a challenger positioning himself as an outsider.

Asheboro City Councilman Eddie Burks, who filed to run against Burr in the May 4 primary, told POLITICO his problem with the senator stems more from Burr's "inaccessibility" than from differences over issues.

"Our experiences in Randolph County with Sen. Burr's office have been less than desirable, and my county is one of the more heavily per capita Republican counties in the state," Burks said. "He's not really presented himself as a man of the people."

After months of mulling over a challenge and quizzing local officials about Burr, Burks said he concluded that many Republicans believe the senator is out of touch and unresponsive.

"I was somewhat amazed at the number of elected officials who could tell me nothing at all about our senator. I believe that the people we send to Washington to represent us are our servants. If our servants are not there for the people, the people should find someone else to do the job," Burks said, mentioning Burr's absence at a recent dedication of the International Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro as a cause for concern.
