Poll: Marshall has early lead for Senate, most Democrats undecided
Secretary of State Elaine Marshall has an early lead in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, but more than half of Democrats haven't yet picked a candidate, according to a new poll by Public Policy Polling.

PPP surveyed 400 N.C. Democrats about who they liked in the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate and 29 percent chose Marshall, 12 percent picked Lexington lawyer Cal Cunningham, 5 percent chose Chapel Hill lawyer Ken Lewis and 2 percent chose Lumberton lawyer Marcus Williams.

Now, before the Marshall campaign fires off the press release announcing that their candidate has a huge lead and is the favorite: 51 percent of Democrats were undecided.

Marshall is the best known candidate with 62 percent of respondents saying they are unsure of whether they view her favorably or unfavorably. Respondents had no opinion on Cunningham and Lewis in large numbers: 84 percent for Cunningham and 81 percent for Lewis.

The poll, which was conducted Feb. 12-15, had a margin of error of 4.9 percentage points.
