Harold Ford Jr. faces tough crowd at NY gay event

Associated Press - February 24, 2010 6:55 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - Harold Ford Jr. got a tough reception when he spoke to a gay advocacy group and tried to explain he no longer opposes gay marriage.

The former Tennessee congressman had voted twice for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

He spoke Wednesday to the Stonewall Democratic Club of New York and was interrupted numerous times by protesters. They said they don't trust him and shouted that he is "anti-gay."

Ford said all he can do is explain he was wrong in the past and has changed his mind.

Ford is considering challenging Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in this fall's Democratic primary. He moved to New York after losing the 2006 U.S. Senate race in Tennessee.

He says he is close to making a decision about whether to run.

2. I think he needs to run back to Tennessee
I lived and worked in N. Jersey/Manhattan for two years and New Yorkers are hard as nails and twice as sharp. Harold doesn't stand a chance.

4. Go upstate
You'll find a different sort of New Yorker than you find within an hour's drive of the city.

15. The only thing that would give him that right
is to win an election. He has the right to try, if he wishes.

5. You can't just move to a more liberal state and flip-flop
It shows complete lack of credibility and doesn't look trustworthy.

6. The fact that he doesn't see this as a problem
is problematic in itself!

7. Gillibrand flip-flopped on some things when she became a Senator, but...
Ford can't really do anything in this race without looking like a complete tool. He's a carpet bagger and he's challenging an incumbent Democrat who has nothing particularly objectionable about her and can win in the general election. Put another way, there is no believable reason as to why he's running other than his own ambition. And while politicians generally do run for things primarily for ambition, they can at least give a compelling reason as to how their being elected would be an improvement over the status quo for somebody other than themselves. Ford really can't.

10. He deserved that tough reception on his voting record alone.
He's not liberal enough for me. He's not liberal enough for NY. He's certainly on the wrong side of GLBT issues.

I used to think he was a talented politician, even though I disagreed with his views on vital issues. Now I think he's not even a talented politician. He was stupid to think he could just move to a more liberal state and run for office this quickly, without having established a more liberal track record.

That's good for us, though, since this primary challenge won't work.

11. Poor guy...found himself a persecuted minority.
Surrounded by people who don't like him and want to rob him of his right to a Senate seat--just because of his lifestyle choices.
