Minority cops object to Obama portrayal in union newspaper
Boston Globe - Today

In the back pages of the latest issue of Pax Centurion, the newspaper of the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association, is a cartoon of President Obama dressed as a superhero dubbed “Obama Dog.’’ The next page shows a picture of the First Couple, their left hands over their hearts, instead of their right, as they salute the flag.
“Americans?!? Are they really?!?’’ blares the headline above the photo.
The newspaper, which appears every other month, has upset several minority officers in the department, who say the jokes against Obama and his wife go too far and are offensive. Dozens of officers, most of them black and Latino, have written a letter to the paper’s editors complaining that the paper is failing to represent them with such content, which shows “the poorest of taste.’’

The police unions in Massachusetts give unions a bad name. There is a strong odor of racism and sexism that permeates their culture. These are the people who voted for Scott Brown and who are currently working hard to get rid of Governor Deval Patrick. The problem is that other unions are going along with them. Last month, when Patrick was supposed to appear at an AFL-CIO meeting, the cops' unions picketed it and the AFL-CIO honored, and even joined, the picket line - even though they had invited the Governor.

AFL-CIO officials said they were unaware of the governor’s withdrawal less than a half-hour before he was scheduled to appear, and the governor’s State Police detail was on hand, signaling the last-minute nature of the decision.

More than 100 labor unionists were lining the street outside the Radisson Hotel in Plymouth, waiting for Patrick’s arrival with signs protesting the governor. Officials from other unions joined them, faulting Patrick on changes to their own benefits.

1. How much do you want to bet those photos of Obama with his hand over his heart are mirrored?

In all the time I've seen Pres. Obama with his hand over his heart, it's the right one.

And I think they found the 'photo' they're talking about.

Hm. Looks fishy to me. That ring doesn't look natural, as if they copied it in.

SURE ENOUGH! Here's the original!

10. The photo in the Boston cops' paper was definitely . . .
a doctored one taken from some right wing site. And I definitely smell talk radio. Boston has a particularly virulent strain of local talk radio - even the sports shows are right wing. And the cops are definitely their democraphic - a white boys club that begrudges the few token minorities and women sprinkled among their ranks.

3. This goes along with what I've been saying for a long time now..
just because they have "union" in their name does NOT mean they are good. Investigate their interests, find out who they support. I am VERY PRO union but I have seen and worked for unions who should not by any means be considered a union. That is one reason I take no stock in a store or organization saying we are unionized so we are better. Prove it, don't just say it!

4. ITA, madmom. My last job was with a union,
and the people running the local were incompetent, racist and sexist.

"just because they have "union" in their name does NOT mean they are good."

So true. Unions are only as good as the people who run them. I've worked for 2 locals--SEIU and IUOE--and the mean-spirited, evil I experienced in each has given me the side-eye disease when it comes to unions.

IUOE's local, particularly, was the most poorly run, racist and sexist entity for which I've ever worked. 2 years after I left, all 3 profane persons who ran the union--the business manager, asst biz mgr, and a lewd, nasty-mouthed biz rep (he called the only woman biz rep a f---ing c--t, was applauded for it by the biz mgr, both of whom ended up in court for it) have been fired for misappropriation and embezzlement, one is still an officer on the local's executive board!

All three have mounted a campaign to unseat the president of the 400K member international. These are bad people, and no one seems able to tame them, even after they have been forced out of the local. They've created a Facebook page on which they berate IUOE's president, and the obscene biz rep is planning to run for biz manager in August.

The Los Angeles teachers' union, LAUSD, is also poorly run, and it's president is an imbecile.

Look very closely at the local and national leadership of any union. I repeat--unions are only as good as the people who run them, and more than a few are lead by long time sexist racists, products of the old white boys network.

5. Yeah, these were the same scumbag cops
that endorsed Snotty Scotty for Senate.

The cops in this state are idiots--the vast majority of them, anyway.

13. The editor is James Carnell and his
swarmy hypocrisy is blatant.. Trying to equate disingenuously portraying President Obama and Martha Coakley with reporting the facts on bush..

<snip>

"The letter writers also complained of a cartoon in the recent issue, depicting Attorney General Martha Coakley behind the wheel of a car sinking into the water.

“When I said I wanted Ted seat this isn’t what I meant,’’ she says in an apparent reference to the 1969 car crash in which Senator Edward M. Kennedy drove off a bridge and into the water, killing his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne."

<snip>

"Larry has never contacted me personally, never had the decency to do that, so I can’t comment on what he has said or hasn’t said,’’ Carnell said.

Carnell also said he never heard from Ellison’s organization when the paper was critical of Republicans.

“When I was against George Bush or anybody on the right, there was never an issue,’’ Carnell said.

“Now they seem to have their angst up for some reason. It’s just sort of amazing.’’

James Carnell wouldn't know "decency" if it appealed to him to stop his bigotry.

11. Minority cops aren't the ones who object
to this blatant ignorance that reflects so badly on the BPPA.

Thank you, Minority Cops! At times..the minorites are the only ones who have any sense on the whole.
