ABC News has learned that Chelsea Clinton is engaged to her longtime boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky, a spokesman for former President Clinton confirmed to ABC News.

Clinton, 29, is the only child of the former president and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She and Mezvinsky -- the son of former Rep. Ed Mezvinsky, D-Iowa, and former Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinksy, D-Penn. -- became friends in Washington, DC, and closer friends when they both attended Stanford University.

The two sent out an email the morning of Friday November 27 saying: "We're sorry for the mass email but we wanted to wish everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving! We also wanted to share that we are engaged! We didn't get married this past summer despite the stories to the contrary, but we are looking toward next summer and hope you all will be there to celebrate with us. Happy Holidays! Chelsea & Marc."

Clinton spokesman Matt McKenna said the couple became engaged before Thanksgiving. He noted that clearly all previous reporting by media outlets about Chelsea having been married over the Summer was obviously incorrect.

An engagement is a commitment made by two people. The announcement informs family and friends that the couple is planning to wed. It does take time to plan a formal wedding. It's a stressful time for the bride, although the groom tends to worry about the cost. The bride has to decide on the gown, the bridesmaids, their gowns, the color scheme, the invitations, the food, the wedding cake, etc. They both usually decide on the venue and the groom on the honeymoon location. Some grooms become very involved in the planning, but some guys couldn't care less and most of the logistics are left up to the bride.

Either way, the time from engagement to wedding is exciting and fun.

There are a myriad problems out there, from the wars to the economy and health care. This was just a feel good post about a former first daughter's engagement, and a Democrat to boot. The only response needed was good wishes to the couple or simply staying away if it offended someone's sensibilities. Instead, you get so called Democrats spewing venom against this girl who has never done anything to anyone here.

It's no mystery that I have never been an Obama fan, but if one of his daughters was about to be married, I would wish her nothing but the best. The children are never responsible for the parents' career choices and actions. This board has really become extremely nasty and mean spirited.

104. Ahhhh....the "Compassion " of Liberals

It's ok to post in this forum about Michelle's clothes, though that has nothing to do with the economy,the unemployment, the banks. the debt, and now a war. Nothing to do with politics. And it's ok to send birthday wishes to Obama's daughters, though that has nothing to do with politics, whatsoever. Yet it's fun to read about and it's a really nice gesture.

But God Forbid it's Hillary, the Secretary of State, a member of Obama's cabinet, whom he CHOSE himself. No, we can't wish her daughter good luck. So unbelievably ironic since Obama has chosen many of Bill Clinton's former staff, too. Obviously he doesn't hate them as much as some of you people do.


I don't think I've ever seen such vindictive, petty remarks. It's truly pathetic.

We are about to escalate in Afghanistan. I can only imagine what some of you will be saying years from now about Obama's daughters.

Will some of you clowns be holding them responsible for the dead and wounded thats will surely happen in Afghanistan? Guess so.

Chelsea, Malia, & Sasha are the children of politicans, they bare no responsibility for the actions of their parents.

Liberals are suppose to be so kind hearted, so concerned, so loving..what BS.

126. The so called "compassion" has always been bullcrap.

Same as their supposed support of women. I saw as much sexism and misogyny during the last 2 years from the left as from the right, and that also includes the vultures in the media.

This thread did not require any sort of compassion, it just needed some basic human decency. Some people here are obviously so full of hate that they can't even send good wishes to a young woman who hasn't harmed anybody. They are far worse than the Freepers, they at least would never post such vile things about the daughter of one of their own.

This board right now disgusts me, the sheer cruelty and plain meanness is sickening. I don't believe in attacking politicians' children, it's not fair.

Not that I can say that I blame you, but you're one of the good people here. I've enjoyed our "conversations". I hope that you take a break, but eventually return.

As far as the people that you mentioned, some seem to think that all wealthy people are evil. They must have forgotten the Roosevelts and Kennedys. Besides, the Clintons were the poorest couple to enter the WH in decades. They didn't even own a home and Bill was making only 35K after 12 years as governor. They also ignore that the Obamas are worth millions thanks to his books. So, what's the problem here?
