Gotta say: Although I'm not wild about the offshore drilling, |
|
I think I see where he's going with this. If I'm correct, I'll hold my fire - for now.

5. I got to say cruising past the offshore gulf rigs with the sun setting is quite beautiful. |
|
I used to work out every week in the passenger gym on this cruise ship that was traveling to New Orleans every Thursday. I'd much rather drilling be done offshore than onshore.

But I'm pissed at all those ripping Obama to shreds over this. If they don't use heat, plastics, drive a car or consume any petroleum products or anything that is created by the use of petroleum products whatsoever, then perhaps these people have the right to tear into Obama, but I seriously doubt (hell, I'll lay odds in Vegas with all the money I have) that this is the case. Be upset about it, but don't fucking tear our President down - he has hard decisions to make, and those who are so quick to criticize him might want to think about wtf they're doing to make this world a better place and clean up this mess.

9. Exactly. They seem to expect Obama to only take extreme left actions, when |
|
he never claimed to be on the extreme left.

18. Basically if they're using a comp to shred Obama or trees, ink, and paper... |
|
They can basically let us know they're hypocrites. They hate him for the very thing they can never live without.

21. That logic is pretty thin |
|
We have very little reserves and whatever is pumped will go straight to the global marketplace.
We cannot meaningfully increase supply, create energy independence, or reduce the cost so it is simply not worth doing at this time. That crude will be better held in reserve for other uses or for a rainy day as we come to the end of the assessable world supply.
No one including Obama has ever made a case that this can have meaningful impact for the average American. If he's planning to nationalize what is produced we have a little more to talk about but otherwise its strictly whistlin' Dixie and we all know it.
The facts haven't change an iota sense we were making wingnuts look more like morons than they already did chanting "drill, baby, drill".
You guys do know that you can generally support the President and still call him when he is doing something silly???? Bad policy is bad policy no matter who advances it.

10. On todays business pages |

No shortage of oil, price rise is because of investors going long on oil. New CAFE standards and offshore drilling announced. Some hedge fund is going to take a hit. Yipee.

11. That's today, but I really don't know what the 'yipee' is about. What |
|
about next week, month, year, decade, when this 'might' have an impact?

13. Long term, both moves could put downward pressure on |
|
oil prices. Especially the CAFE rules. Just a small increase in auto milage can cause a large decrease in oil use. That along with possible increase in supply(off shore drilling) might cause investments in long term prices to drop. If not drop, at least slow the price increases caused by China and India. Recent markets have jumped in big moves on the prospect of growth in the economy, like this weeks oil prices surge. Supply is the same as last week. Just the psychology of "might happen" is what drives investors. The increase is a bet that the heat up of the economy will increase demand. On the other hand, the possible decrease from new supplies and better milage can drive prices down.
The yipee is about the possible investor, that is driving the current increase, stands a better chance of going bust on his bet.

12. There are several issues that I have thought about with regards to offshore drilling |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-01-10 09:49 PM by Jennicut
No one wants to admit as Dems and liberals that they help contribute to America's dependence on fossil fuels. It does make our world what it is an we are very used to that way of life. I don't see anyone here advocating to go back to a lifestyle of early America. None of us want to be dependent on foreign resources. On the other hand, drilling off shore might not produce much. It could be a gap measure until alternatives are further developed or it could be a drop in the bucket. Something tells me, considering the way T. Boone Pickens has talked about it, the estimates of what is there is much lower then has been predicted in the past. And Obama could essentially eliminate this issue as the savior Rethugs think it will be. If not much is there, then the US will have to either be totally dependent on foreign oil or actually put the money into developing alternatives. I would say nuclear energy has more promise to be the the gap measure then offshore drilling does but it remains controversial. James Lovelock, who developed the theory of Gaia, is worth looking into, and thinks alternatives are waste of time and don't work. He advocates for nuclear energy as the best method to stop climate change. I don't have all the answers but like looking outside the box.

14. Another part of Off shore drilling is |
|
natural gas. Much cleaner than oil and it is much faster to bring on line when found. I think that natural gas is at least half of the picture in this latest move.
