Request for a link: "Obama refused to list his race on Harvard Law application
Does anyone have a link, or is that a rumor that somehow snowballed into fact?
I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but someone on the web is contesting this, and I want some links.
I know, I know, it's ancient history, but I just LOVE to shoot the right wingers down with FACTS!!!
Any help in research would be appreciated.
Thanks, folks!

2. I would guess that black folks commonly do that, as a result of white folks' whining. |

No one should state their race on any piece of paper where it can be used against you. The only exceptions are the US Census or medical records.

Edited on Sat May-01-10 07:36 PM by Justitia
Wait! I just remembered his white side is Irish - he's Black Irish!
He's both, so I guess you could combine them to be "Blite" or "Whack"
No, he's a Space Alien!

If someone is half black and half white, why should he say he is "black"? Leaving it blank seems appropriate to me, if that is what he did do. I don't understand why anyone is making this an issue anyway.

24. What do most African Americans "put down?" I'm certainly not |
|
going to put down, African, Scotch-Irish, German, Choctaw and Creek!! You're forgetting the "one drop" rule.

25. If you're half and half though... |

it's a little different. It would be interesting to see what "bi-racial" people put down. Part of the problem is that a lot of these forms don't account for the fact that people may identify as something other than black, white, asian, etc. especially nowadays. It forces them to put down what society would view them as, instead of what they view themselves as.
Personally, I avoid putting my race down unless it is required, and it rarely is. And I'm what society would refer to as "white". We need to encourage moving away from the one drop rule, because there are a LOT of people who don't operate on that rule anymore.

which is indicative of how we are most often treated. PO may be "half n half" but there are many of us who are much lighter in complexion than he is and can "pass" for white, if they so choose. He couldn't pass if he wanted to so it would be kind of stupid for him to declare himself anything other than African American. That can be a positive or a negative depending upon the circumstances.

on some forms like the Census, but they still should expand the field to include more options instead of having it based off of rather older ideas of race. I guess I was thinking someone like Obama could put down whatever they identify themselves as, including something like "biracial".

How could not identifying your race be a bad thing. I would say this a good thing, especially if you want to be accepted on your merits with without affirmative action help.

12. (1) Whoever makes a claim bear the burden of proving it. (2) Why should I give a rat's ass? |
|
You can spend all your time debunking claims of liars and idiots. It takes about ten seconds to invent a fictitious factoid, and it can take hours or days to debunk it. So if you're not careful, you can waste lots of time on garbage -- the burden of proof is with the person making the claim
Beyond that, there is the question: who the fuck cares? Suppose, for example, somebody says, Barack Obama went to school with a serial killer. I have no idea whether it's true or not -- but what the hell difference would it make, whether it was true or not. Similarly, I say race is a bullshit idea, designed to justify things like enslaving folk or exterminating people to steal their land -- so why should I care whether Obama checked race A or race B or neither on his Harvard Law application?

If he didn't, then he was actively not taking advantage of affirmative action. Given that Freepers hate the idea of any minorities being given consideration over white people, I'd think they'd applaud this.

One would think that college applications, like one's college transcript, are PRIVATE and not to be released to the public by anyone other than the student involved.
Why do YOU care? Seriously. Of what possible relevance is ti?
