President Obama signs the Freedom of the Press Act
Edited on Mon May-17-10 10:55 AM by nmbluesky
President Obama signs the Freedom of the Press Act – a measure strengthening State Department oversight of international press protections – into law Monday, with a morning event in the Oval Office. JTA reports the president will be joined by the family of the late Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was killed in Pakistan in 2002 and for whom the law is named. The event is pooled press.

3. This law covers a FP worldwide.
The new law mandates the State Department to identify countries in which there are violations of press freedom; determine whether the government authorities of those countries participate in, facilitate or condone the violations; and report the actions these governments have taken to preserve the safety and independence of the media and ensure the prosecution of those who attack or murder journalists.
