For that we should be grateful.

1. specter was not the devil incarnate, he was just what used to be a moderate republican |
incidently, what used to be considered a moderate republican is a very rare element in the republican party

2. Specter wasn't a bad guy. |
I think he would have continued to be a pretty good Dem even if he'd survived the primary, because he knew his political survival depended on Democrats now. That said, I don't mind or care that he lost, but it does mean that getting Snowe or Collins to jump ship is pretty unlikely at this point.

4. So did Richard Shelby. Bork's nomination failed 58 to 42 |
I am grateful to Senator Specter for voting in favor of health care reform and the stimulus.

6. We could create a long list |
And there'd be pro's and cons on both sides. But the con side would be MUCH longer, and filled with support for some of the more odious aspects of republican rule.

8. Biden influenced him on that, arguing against Bork's intrusions on people's right to |
privacy. One of the more fascinating confirmation processes in my opinion. Then he totally went and became an asshole on the Anita Hill hearings. Specter has always been like that...one step forward, 20 steps back.

9. That's how I think of him |
I like him one minute and then he does something kind of sleezy. Its nice to know where a politician stands and Specter is all over the place, doing whatever benefits him.

10. Yup. Deep inside, I don't think he is a terrible man. |
Just desperate. He was a moderate Repub trying to get conservative Rethugs to like him and then later on, trying to get liberal Dems to like him.

11. Voted for John Bolton as UN ambassador. Voted straight conservative 80% of the time |
under Bush.
For me, the Bolton nomination was one of the worst in an administration rich in horrendous nominations. Even Voinovich cried on the floor of the senate because he was afraid to move the nomination to a full vote. No problem for Specter I guess.
