Scott Brown double crossed Harry on FinRef but will likely vote yes today. |
|
From TPM.. "Sen. Scott Brown acknowledged tonight that he did indeed tell Majority Leader Harry Reid he'd support financial reform legislation, before voting to filibuster at the last minute. But he says he's confident he'll ultimately side with the Democrats, and suggested he may switch his vote back to yes as early as tomorrow." http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/05/brown-says-hell-likely-vote-for-wall-street-reform.php?ref=fpblgDont need Feingold.

3. I like Feingold but I think he's wrong on this.. |
|
From what I have been hearing/reading this bill is good enough, not perfect, but good enough to make a difference and help substantially to minimize another financial meltdown.

7. From what I hear, it will permit large banks to take over smaller ones & Credit Unions. |

It will fully give our government over to Goldman Sachs, et. al., if this toxic POS is passed.

10. So do you read that it makes that easier than it is now? |
|
Do you by any chance have a link to this?
There is a huge difference between arguing it is too weak, which I think even most Senate Democrats think, but it is clear that it contains more good than bad.

8. As I read it, the GOP is fine with shutting down amendments which would strengthen the bill |
|
I see no reason more time for Democratic amendments can't be extended. Cantwell also voted against cloture. She wants a vote on her amendment to reinstate Glass Steagall. I'd like to see that, too. There is also an amendment to limit fees on ATM cards. I would like to see that, also.
The Republicans were able to offer a slew of amendments but we have to rush to cloture when it comes time for Democratic amendments? Not sure how that translates into helping the GOP. Looks like that helps Wall Street.

11. So, passing a really weak bill that won't prevent another meltdown... |
|
... is the way to fix that? GOP was pushing to shut down amendments because they knew several very strong amendments which would make this real reform were to be offered by Democrats. I don't see how doing what the GOP wanted (shutting down further amendments) is the right thing to do.

13. Feingold said it and I believe him. |
|
There have been stories for a couple of days about the GOP wanting to shut down amendments now that they were able to offer all of theirs. Does not make sense to me that not shutting down amendments yet helps them. Your argument is thin. Feingold going against what the GOP wants is helping the GOP? Doesn't add up.

14. Brown and Feingold have totally different reasons to vote against cloture. |
|
Edited on Thu May-20-10 09:53 AM by Mass
Brown wants to weaken the bill, Feingold to strengthen it.
Reid should allow voting on a few amendments that are still pending (like the Hagan amendment against payday loans companies or the Cantwell-McCain amendment, even if this forces our dear senators to make difficult choice. They have to decide once and for all on which side they fall: bank lobbyists or regular people.
