I didn't know they were trying to move the oil platform to a new site
according to the Times:

Drilling records from the doomed rig indicate that early on the morning of the blast, workers had begun preparing to plug and cap the well to move the platform to a new site.

Halliburton, a US oil services contractor, was responsible for cementing and plugging the well.

BP has raised concerns abouty the quality of the work, amid concerns that the cement used in the operation may have been contaminated with mud.

Halliburton has denied there was any problem with the cementing of the well.

However, two hours prior to the explosion, a pressure test yielded a faulty result. A second test indicated a “very large abnormality” – a sign that something was deeply wrong with the well.

Nevertheless, engineers later decided they were “satisfied” with the result and pressed ahead with plans to start removing drilling mud and replacing it with seawater.

1. Get Informed
Edited on Thu May-27-10 01:11 AM by Kalun D
watch the 60 minutes piece where one of the survivors does a tell all.

the pressure test failed because the BOP was bad

the plug failed because BP over ruled everyone and made them take out the mud before the last cap was in place.

There are 2 kinds of rigs, a drilling rig and a production rig. The drilling rig drills the hole and caps it. The production rig connects and taps the oil later. They were moving the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig because the drilling was finished.

7. Good Vid Huh
It's one of the brighter points of this whole fiasco

that this information could get out and be presented on the mainstream media

I heard that this episode of 60 minutes was blacked out in certain areas

it's sort of a drag that it has no views on YouTube

It's sort of a drag that no one in progressive radio has heard about it. I listen to them all and they all get it wrong on what happened.

3. It was a drilling rig, not a production rig.
They're different beasts. One is for drilling and the other is for pumping.
