Obama does right thing, vows official response on Sestak
Greg Sargent

A quick post before getting into the main topic of the big press conference: Obama just said that an "official response" is forthcoming from the White House on the Joe Sestak mess.

"There will be an official response shortly on the Sestak issue," he told reporters. "You will get it from my administration."

"I can assure the public that nothing improper took place," Obama added, promising that the response is coming soon, not in "weeks or months."

Good.

Yes, Republicans will continue attacking no matter what. But at least now this battle can be fought in the realm of facts, rather than in a shadowy fact-free arena where Republicans are making generalized charges of a "cover up." This will prove to have been the right decision.

Also: Check out John Cole's post arguing that now that Sestak puked this up, he should deal with it." Looks like the White House, not Sestak, is cleaning up the puke, however.

And make no mistake about this- Sestak did this for his own political advantage so he could run as the darling of the left (a good place to be in a Democratic primary against a former Republican), the “outsider who even the White House wants to get rid of and look at what a straight shooter I am- no one can buy me off because I am a fighter blah blah blah.” Now his stupid ass needs to clean up the mess he created, and all he has to do is back up his claim that he was offered a job, and tell us what that job was and who offered it. Ed Rendell is now calling on Sestak to talk, but that may just be Ed’s way of sticking in the shiv, because Rendell supported Specter and knows damned well that Sestak floated this information for his own personal benefit.

And you don’t get to just say “trust us, we didn’t do anything wrong.” I happen to think that this was the kind of thing that happens every day in politics and is no big deal, but now that Sestak puked this up, he should deal with it.

1. It needs to be dealt with and then Tweety can stop
having a near heart attack on everything.

Rendell is an idiot and just needs to stay out of it, too.

3. If you go by the timeline of the Mabus appointment for SoN
then the job offer would have come prior to the offer to Mabus which means that the offer would have been made prior to Sestak annoncing he would run for the nomination for US Senator form Pennsylvania.

16. That needs to be strongly stressed.
Sestak is just plain stupid. He doesn't help himself and his constituents when makes an enemy of the administration. And quite possibly of the other Pennsylvania delegation and connections to the state party.

17. That's when these job offers are historically made.
Prior to an announcement. The potential candidate has not made up their mind and administrations simply make the offer prior to the announcement. If they accept, they cannot run for a public office.

6. It's a little late to "get out in front of it"
Why does an "official announcement" have to come later? Wouldn't a simple yes I did or no I didn't suffice right now? I mean, this just sorta sounds like "We'll let you know as soon as we come up with a plausible story that keeps all of us out of trouble. That story may be the truth or it may be a lie, but we won't know that until we come up with it."

5. Chris Matthews is a person that I really want to like, but it's very hard to like the guy.
It still pisses me off how he was acting when Bush landed on that carrier.

8. I very rarely watch him
Edited on Thu May-27-10 02:33 PM by HughMoran
I usually wait to see what his 'theme' word is and his demeanor, 90% of the time I switch the channel. Ed, Keith and Rachel are enough anyway.

11. What is so hard about an Official Response?
Simply tell the truth.
That can be done immediately.
There is no gray area here.
Either it was, or it wasn't.

Why the delay?

12. Has the media talking about anything else since President Obama's news conference?
I have to agree with one thing Palin has said about the media. They are, indeed-- and for the most part, 'lame!'

20. "The right thing?"
If there is a good response to this, the proper thing to do was to get it out ASAP. The media and the Repugs who control them will take "shortly" to mean "we need more time to prepare a lie," and I won't be able to blame them for thinking that way. I'd be screaming "bullshit, bullshit" if any Repug promised me an official response "shortly."
