House now debating DADT, and other amendments to the Defense Appropriations bill.
Edited on Thu May-27-10 02:15 PM by flpoljunkie
Republicans say the DADT amendment is driven by the left in this country and is a 'political agenda' and that DADT needs to be repealed by Congress after the study. Apparently, the R's will attempt a filibuster in the Senate. An earlier Republican Rep from Georgia lamented that the troops would be taken by surprise when they saw the inevitable headline that DADT had been repealed. Of course, he did not mention that troops have been polled and are okay with gays serving in the military--they have always served, and we need everyone who is willing to serve their country, regardless of sexual orientation. Remember that all troops must abide by appropriate behavioral standards.

Their argument is specious and disingenuous--both Republicans and Democrats who would deny gays an opportunity to openly and honorably serve their country.

1. I can't think of a single argument made by modern Republicans that isn't disingenous
This one apparently to shore up the support of their bigoted base.

2. Republicans have virtually no integrity. If their lips are moving, they're usually lying.

3. I think this is just the necessary political theater
Right wingers each get to make their soundbite for use in the upcoming election... yes, pandering to their bigoted, homophobic base. Gotta make sure those campaign checks keep coming in.

4. Politics is not for the faint of heart.
It seem that many politicians will do or say anything to stay in power.

5. Political theater is driving the whole debate

Everything from when the house votes, to when the report about implementation is delivered all strikes me as what each side is doing to speak to their own base.

DADT repeal is going to happen. The tactics that are getting it to that point are interesting to watch unfold. A lot of signaling going on.

6. Yes, but it is the right thing to repeal DADT. If not now, when? If not us, who? Barack Obama

8. What's not in question is DADT would not likely be repealed if R's were to win back power.
President Obama is keeping his promise to the LGBT community and those who believe in equality for all Americans.

10. Patrick Kennedy just gave a fiery and emotional speech in support of DADT and lamented multiple the
multiple deployments of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
