Poll finds nobody cares about job offer "scandal"
Greg Sargent

Yes, it's Rasmussen, but this is noteworthy, since it's the first polling to gauge public attitudes towards the Joe Sestak and Andrew Romanoff job offer "scandals." It turns out nobody cares:

Voters express only modest concern and hardly any surprise about the secret job offers made by the Obama White House to Democratic politicians in Colorado and Pennsylvania in hopes of getting them to drop their primary challenges of incumbent senators...

44% of voters also say the job offers made to keep candidates out of closely contested state primaries are fairly typical of what politicians normally do. Just 19% say that's not true, while 37% more are not sure.

Less than one in five see the job offers as out of the ordinary. And while 32% say the offers will be "very important" to determining their vote in November, Rasmussen concludes that this is low compared to other issues. As Scott Rasmussen dismissively puts it: "Voters see business as usual."

It turns out that putting the info on the table about these job offers enabled people to see this story for what it is. So now can we say that this was politically the right thing to do?

They made a nothingburger out of a nothingburger. Pathetic. They should stick to what they know -- their familiar wide-stance faux diaper luggage handling bathroom escapades.

4. What's funny is that they didn't blink an eye over Obama clearing the field for Gillibrand.
There were at least three that Obama had a word with (Steve Israel, Carolyn Maloney, and I can't remember the other name).

This issue is and always was horseshit.

6. I can't figure out Republicans
When they cry wolf over stupid shit like this, it just makes them look small-minded and shows that they would rather cheat than work hard to get elected.

This story never even got me to slightly raise my eyebrow - it's boring and routine.

But did you really think we were going to get that change? I never did, which is why I wasn't a fan of Obama during the 2008 campaign season. Voted for Obama in the GE because I thought he would be better than McCain. I think Obama is, but that's not really saying much. I think Obama's heart's in the right place, but he was never going to change DC on his own. Too many in Congress, on both sides, like the status quo.

Really? For this to be a different country entirely?

Geez the President still lives in the White House! That's wrong, isn't it? You expected change.

when Robert Gibbs claims that it's part of the President's job to be leader of the party, and hardly a peep that he's using his public sector job to benefit his private-sector employers.

23. Woe be it for them to try
Unlike the Clinton years, I doubt that most people will care and when they see- I mean, REALLY see that the Republicans aren't interested in helping them but rather engaging in partisan witch hunts and settling scores, they'll toss them out......again (hopefully). I mean, unlike the 1990's, we have way too many problems that have to be dealt with for them to be focused on Acorn, political job offers, a washed-up 60's ex-radical, etc although I know that they don't care about anything else. I just hope that enough people realize that, as imperfect as many Dems in Congress are, they're at least trying to make things better for more people. For the Republicans it's simply all about power and maintaining that power by any means necessary.

24. Actually, the Clinton years showed that people didn't care all that much at all
Republicans controlled the House for 8 long years after the whitewater/Lewisnky impeachment fiasco.

That's the thing- Republicans have the political fortitude to press their agenda, while Democrats in Congress and the administration look around and say "oh, we can't do this or that because _________."

More than any other factor- this is why a party that ought by any objective reckoning be relegated to the fringe for a generation is now poised to take back the majority.

25. It's debatable how "poised" they are to retake Congress
maybe a year ago, I might've agreed with you but I don't see this year shaping up to be THAT bad for the Dems (at least it's looking better, particularly if a bunch of "teabaggers" get nominated). You're right about the Republicans apparently outliving the Clinton-Lewinsky impeachment fiasco for several years thereafter but there were other factors that came into play as well (i.e. 9/11) that almost certainly helped ensure that they remained in power. It would've been interesting to see how things might've played out electorally in 2002 and 2004 had 9/11 and Iraq not happened. The Democrats were (barely) in the majority in the Senate by 2001 due to Jeffords' defection and Bush's (P)residency and agenda was sagging/stalled after only a few months. Without 9/11 and Bush/Rove's Machiavellian abilities to take full political advantage of it to push their conservative/neocon agenda and cow their opposition, Bush would've more than likely been a one-termer like his father and the Republicans might've been relegated to the minority in one or both houses of Congress sooner.

Of course, back then, we weren't dealing with all of the severe problems we are today, so I doubt that people- who believe the Democrats aren't doing enough- are going to tolerate the Republicans simply spending all of their time chasing their tails trying to find something to impeach Obama on. I could be wrong but..........

26. The fact that we're even talking credibly about their retaking of the house
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 10:54 PM by depakid
after their disastrous record of "achievements" and considering the fact that they're the most pathetic, over the top group of dishonest whacko's to ever grace the modern American political scene says a lot.

And none of it good.

In the end, if I had to hazard a guess based on current circumstance, I'd want to agree with you that it won't be quite that bad- but if, as I suspect, we're headed for a double dip recession and a nasty hurricane season in the Gulf, all bets are off.

27. It's depressing
to think that people might put the Republicans back in charge just because Obama and the Democrats haven't been able to clean up the Republicans' mess(es) fast enough. It should be noted however that the polls do not reflect the corporate media narrative that we're doomed in November and/or the Republicans are once again ascendant.
