President Obama Meets with the Families of the BP 11
Readout of the President's Meeting with the Family Members of the Victims of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig Disaster

In the Red Room and the State Dining Room, the President had individual discussions with family members of the victims of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster. He was joined by Secretary Ken Salazar, Carol Browner, Valerie Jarrett and Admiral Thad Allen.

The President expressed his condolences and told them that he, the First Lady and the entire administration are behind them and will be there long after the cameras are gone as they go through their unimaginable grief. He also said that while offshore drilling is a part of our nation’s overall energy strategy, he simply could not go forward with new deepwater drilling until we have the proper safety measures in place to ensure that a tragedy like this never happens again.

(some of the family members had wanted the President to cancel the moratorium)

Families who met w/44 say he understands complexity of oil issue in Gulf; confident he'll press to find cause of explosion & #oilspill.

1. When CNN interviewed them, the first question
out of the female interviewer's mouth was "do you think the president is doing enough?" That followed a report that was very sympathetic to BP CEO. Good job CNN.

3. Not fair
I only watch a bit of Anderson Cooper at night and he has been very critical and actually surprisingly good.

4. Anderson Cooper, as much as I used to dismiss him
is pretty darned good. I wanted to believe he was just a rich kid looking for something to do. Katrina changed all that for me.

5. the Prez did the right thing...
I'm sure it was a great honor to be the guest of he and the first lady. Just too bad it was related to a tragedy.
