Obama Needs To Use The Speech To Make The Case For A New Energy Policy! F*** The Chamber of Comm.!
We are in the midst of the worse environmental disaster in history. This spill underscores that we simply lack the technology to stop an oil leak in an environment where the water pressure is more than a 2 thousand PSI compared to 15 psi near the surface. This disaster illustrates our addition to cheap oil at the cost of despoiling the environment, which has also lead us into a needless war in Iraq.

If we do not seriously make an effort now to develop alternative energy sources, I doubt that we ever will. Instead, as oil supplies dry up, the U.S. will slip into irrelevancy, and the world will become increasingly hostile as nations fight for the dwindling reserves.

I hope that Obama does not merely talk about the oil spill, but make the demand and make the case for a new energy bill that funds the development of alternative energy sources.

The Chamber of Commerce will, of course, oppose him. The question is whether liberals will buy into the corporate narrative? Will we conveniently ignore the Chamber and the Oil industry as they funnel millions into stopping Obama and Democrats?

Lets not fool ourselves. Republicans get over 70 percent of all contributions from the oil industry. Despite some of themore sensationalistic posts on this Board, Obama is no friend to the oil industry, nor is the oil industry his friend.

1. There won't be better timing. It will be interesting to see what the President does with it.

That would also allow him to (re)claim the initiative and get ahead of this. Then whenever he would get criticism he has a perfect response. "The important thing is to *never* have this happen again"! And to do that we have to restructure our entire energy backbone.

Imagine ;) !!!

5. The Corporations Are Devoting Millions To Preserving The Status Quo - Here's "American Solutions"
An astroturf organization that was founded by Newt Gingrich to pretty much oppose any efforts at reform, even those by Republicans like Dick Lugar:

http://www.americansolutions.com/

BREAKING: Graham to Support Lugar Energy Tax

A lesser-known energy tax introduced in the Senate late last month just received a major endorsement: Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

The "Practical Energy and Climate Plan," authored by Indiana Republican Richard Lugar, would apply a declining cap on carbon emissions through 2050. The emissions reduction targets, however, are much less stringent than the American Power Act introduced on May 12th by Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT).

Graham's endorsement of Lugar's bill comes as energy tax supporters in the Senate are scrambling to find enough votes for global warming legislation, which had been one of President Barack Obama's key legislative goals for his first year in office.

Graham is seen as a key swing vote in passing a climate bill, the lone Republican who worked with Kerry and Lieberman in drafting their energy tax legislation. The South Carolina Republican pulled his sponsorship, however, due to what he considered misplaced legislative priorities on immigration reform.

6. I wonder what the hell they mean by "tri-partisan citizen action network"...
:wtf:

American Solutions is a tri-partisan citizen action network of over 1.5 Million members. Our goal is to create the next generation of solutions that will ensure that the United States remains the safest, freest, and most prosperous country in the world.

What three parties? Is this a nod to the Tea Party?
