7. Yeah, weird regional quirk. I grew up calling them snowballs
took me a long time to figure out what a snowcone was. :) It says snowball on the trailer.

12. Snowballs? Is that like pop?
I grew up in New England and when people would say soda pop I was like, huh? We always just called it soda. Then there is jimmies and shots.

15. You mean like coke?
We call pop coke, no matter the brand or flavor? "What will you have?" "Coke." "What kind of Coke?" "Root Beer will be fine." "Would you like a snowball, too?"

Don't get me started on neutral grounds. :)

46. i remember a period of years where "coke" was also used for
"tab" or "diet rite" in our house (any type of dark cola--i don't know if it would have applied for root beer or 7up)

but rather than "soda pop" it was always just "pop" in this part of illinois

as in "do you want a pop?"

root beer and ice cream was always a "black cow" rather than a "root beer float"

Tonic's? And frappes for shakes. I am originally from Lowell Mass, we left there in 1965 when I was 4.

38. Those terms also were used. But it was either frappes or MILK shakes.
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 02:12 PM by SPedigrees
I don't think *frappe* came in until the early 60s and they only abbreviated *milk shakes* down to *shakes* much later on, around the time they dropped the "pop" from *soda pop,* maybe in the later 60s? I think *tonic* went out in the very early 1950s. I remember it only when I was a tiny tot, and then only in northern New England. In MA and CT we called it soda pop.

It seems like some of these terms may have been very localized even with a small geographical area like New England. *Tonic* apparently lived on in some places in southern NE, and never made it to other areas at all.

33. Maybe it is a difference with Connecticut, certain areas we talk more like
New Yorkers (NYC) and on the eastern side of the state we talk more like NH and Vermont. CT is funny like that. The friend that said pop to me when I was a kid was from PA.

In fact, if you search the Onion using "Joe Biden" they have quite a few good ones.

Why can I imagine him saying something like this? It may not be right, but of all the politicians you might want to "drink a beer with" he seems to be the one you might actually want to. He is good people.

on edit: Hillary seems to really enjoy his company.

He says that she's like a sister to him. I remember when Kennedy chose to endorse Obama the day of Bush's last State of the Union. All eyes were on her when she went into the chamber that night. It must have been difficult for her, but Joe sat next to her and made her laugh. He's a nice man.
