"So, yes, we’re emerging from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Yes, we’re a nation at war. Yes, we’re now battling the worst economic -- environmental disaster in American history. Any one of these challenges alone would test our country. Confronting them all at once might overwhelm a lesser nation. But look around you. Look at the person standing next to you. You look around and you see the strength and resilience that will carry us through".
(President Obama, Naval Air Technical Training Center Pensacola, Florida, June 15, 2010).

The President giving a dose of reality.

4. At the risk of being labeled a hater...
While these photos are nice, I don’t think that they convey the message that they really need to. If I were going to post some photos to show how the President is engaged with the situation, I’d show him listening intently to residents giving their complaints. I’d show him looking asking tough questions to Thad Allen. These photos look like generic campaign photos and don’t really connote the kind of hands on, getting things done image that he’s being criticized for not having. It’s not happy picnic day at the beach. We need to get down to business.

That being said, I think that a lot of this PR and “is he angry enough” stuff is junk. But if that’s what these photos are intended to solve, I don’t think it gets the job done.

10. We've seen those pics you speak of ..these
are a different view..along with these words.

And, there's no need to bring in "hater" ..they're obvious and criticism is not hating.

19. "Yes, we’re a nation at war"
The U.S. policy of endless war would better be described as status quo not a challenge. The real challenge would be to become a nation that didn't feel the need to destroy its own economy by killing people in other countries.

31. There is no good reason
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 04:42 PM by dflprincess
protecting the profits of war profiteers is not a good reason.

And, after 9 years, there is no crisis - it is business as usual.

The challenge is having the courage to get out and redirect the money being wasted in Iraq and Afghanistan to our own infrastructure - something that might help our economy instead of continuing to run it into the ground.

Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 08:35 PM by dflprincess
I complained about these extravaganzas when Bush was president and I see no reason to stop because there is a Democrat in the White House. We need to get out if, for no other reason, we can't afford it. The cost of these wars will destroy us.

BTW, Johnson & Nixon told us there were good reasons for Vietnam and you know what? They were lying too.

22. You know, I usually worry that I'm not critical enough of the president.
I was an organizer on the campaign in 2008, so I've drank my fair share of kool aid. Compared to many people on this board, I'm a totally in his tank. But your push back on my minor criticism about these photos really gives me some perspective. As much of an Obamaphile as I am, there are always people out there who will always stick up for everything he does.

25. Because a poster decided to string a few pictures together
of various activities by this President from his visit, you chose to comment that it won't solve the problem....but of course, I don't believe that anyone thought it would. The point is that the OP chose those photos; it wasn't a press release from the White House....which is why your comments in reference to those photos made little sense to me.

Lord knows I'm not so happy with the administration's response, and believe it could have been handled better, from a PR point of view, considering that I wrote to the White House about 3 weeks ago asking them to have him give a speech from the Oval Office, and commented that is what was needed here at DU at the time...

Read it here....
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=433&topic_id=312070&mesg_id=312086

and here....

and check the dates.

Glad they read my email....late, but at least they took heed eventually.

38. My point is that better pictures could have been used to make a better point.
Chosen by the poster or the White House, I don’t think they convey the message that the title of the OP led me to believe that they were going to. I even admitted that this whole controversy is phony.

You responded to my minor criticism by lumping in with republicans and someone who "wants to complain". I worked really hard on the campaign, so I don't need to put up with that.

9. Something we tend to forget
By and large these people did not, and probably never will, vote for him.

Look at the Obama totals from the Gulf Coast in 2008. The numbers are terrible. So their predisposition will be to think he's doing a lousy job no matter what. At least the people in the pictures seem inclined to give him a chance and hear what he has to say.
