I wish I could tell you that the first development is that BP has capped the well, stopped the leak. They haven‘t. They can‘t. They don‘t know how. And no one else does either. So people need to stop kidding themselves that the gusher was ever something that was going to be stopped by Obama saying or doing anything beyond what he has already done.

Unfortunately, Americans are about to get a harsh lesson in realities of physics and ecological economics. That may be one reason for the exhortation to prayer- divine intervention would be about the only saving grace.

Most people still haven't come to grips with the magnitude of this catastrophe- though my guess is that the President's not among those people. Must be pretty harsh to have to consider that one's own administration could have prevented this by delivering on the changes that it promised.
