Romney picking up where he left off, courting GOP stars
Mitt Romney, the probably-maybe-could-be presidential contender again in 2012, continues to court bold-faced names in the Republican Party, as he did so successfully during the last go-round.

This time it’s a young, rising star and darling of the Tea Party movement, who just happens to be from a key presidential primary state.

Romney and his former lieutenant governor, Kerry Healey, were scheduled to host a fund-raiser yesterday for Nikki Haley, the Republican candidate for governor of South Carolina, at Healey’s home in Beverly.

Romney has strongly backed Haley, who has generated considerable buzz in political circles, campaigning for her in South Carolina last month and showering her with more than $40,000 in donations from his political action committees.

1. This guy will be running for President after they bury him.
That's how scummy and opportunistic he is.

NEWS FLASH, MITT! YOU'RE NEVER GOING TO BE PRESIDENT! THE TEABAGGERS FUCKING HATE YOU!

2. My father still hates him more than Palin or Bush or Cheney or anyone else.
One of these days I need to transcribe one of his anti-Romney rants. Some of the funniest shit you'll ever hear. :D

5. I'd love to hear one of those from a person who obviously has a lot to say about it
from firsthand experience.

Unfortunately, the way I look at it, Romney is one of those who could be sold as an ostensibly moderate and competent candidate- and with the economy still in stagnation could well beat Obama.

3. I hate him more than Palin
because he'd sell this country to the Chinese for a buck in a heartbeat. Plus my BIL worked for him and loves him, and any politician my BIL likes I hate.

4. It's too late, Palin has taken control of the party with the teabaggers and Christian
fundamentalists-evangelicals.

8. Sharon Angle, Nicki Haley, Ron Paul, Pat Toomey, Marco Rubio, Jim DeMint,,
Michelle Bachmann - all have chance of winning. Palin is out there endorsing and leading with the rhetoric that the media is eating up. The republicans don't have anyone else leading except Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity and Fox "news".

9. Palin is damn near irrelevant- kept alive- resuscitated by people in need of a boogeywoman
Not so dissimilar in many ways than Osama Bin Laden.

12. Is it not obvious who is control?
The notion that the Republican Party is moderate in anyway is ridiculous. They've purged and place a few people and are working toward purging more.

13. Fundamentalists would go berserk at the convention if they tried to nominate a Mormon.

electorate on a personable basis.

He comes off as mechanical. His physical movements and therefore his emotional personality seem, well, Nixonian, programmed, machine-like.

His intense ambition for glory registers in his public appearances but it would be better for his candidacy if he were less matinee star handsome and instead more personable.

He seems cold.

He won some primaries and enjoyed some support in the GOP 2008 nomination race but even with his good looks and fat wallet he was unable to shove Huckabee out of the way and both of them lost to McCain. Huckabee didn't have a whole lot of cash (or even much inclination to raise any) and all of Romney's money couldn't defeat Huckabee's folksiness and appeal to fundie voters. Usually money talks in politics, but though Romney has lots of it he lacks other things, like a personality. Huckabee won in Iowa. McCain won in New Hampshire.

The competition is more fierce this time around and Romney's much more liberal years as Governor of Massachusetts are unlikely to help him among many Republican primary activists. He's monied, but also mechanical, and Mormon.
