The Obama administration said it was standing by its decision to oust Sherrod
Until we are told otherwise, this is the official story:

The Obama administration said it was standing by its decision to oust Sherrod, despite evidence that her remarks were misconstrued and calls for the USDA to reconsider.

A competent press secretary would be ahead of this story, which obviously Gibbs is not!

2. It doesn't even make sense
to not reinstate now. The facts are there, it was a doctored tape. They would ruin this womam for what reason? It's a cruel thing to do if they don't apologize and reinstate her. It says this administration can't be trusted to do the right thing and they fear the right wing.
Hope this story is old and will be updated with better news but the hope thing has pretty much run out.

3. Sadly, it appears the decision will stand, per CNN Anderson Cooper
Edited on Tue Jul-20-10 09:44 PM by IndianaGreen
CNN is reporting Vilsack's point of view, which is that it didn't matter what was on the rest of the tape, Sherrod had become a liability to the department.

I am baffled by that answer, and I hope the White House steps in and reverses this travesty!

these are some real sick people to do this to her.

Not holding m breath for the WH to step in and overrule Vilsack. Would be a pleasant surprise to have it happen.

5. Who is sicker, the ones that do it, or the ones that go along?
Anderson Cooper is himself surprised that the firing may stand.

6. The ones that go along
should be knowing better, they don't care.

I wonder if media pressure could force them to reinstate her? That would be a change.

9. She is a career employee, not a political appointee
Like those in the Administration. It's sickening what they are doing to this woman.

7. USDA will not rehire
Farmer's wife says fired USDA official helped save their land; USDA will not rehire

By Marcus K. Garner and Christian Boone

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack issued a statement Tuesday saying the controversy made Sherrod's position as a rural development director, a job she was appointed to last March, untenable.

"First, for the past 18 months, we have been working to turn the page on the sordid civil rights record at USDA and this controversy could make it more difficult to move forward on correcting injustices," Vilsack said. "Second, state rural development directors make many decisions and are often called to use their discretion. The controversy surrounding her comments would create situations where her decisions, rightly or wrongly, would be called into question making it difficult for her to bring jobs to Georgia."

8. I would have a difficult time believing that the Administration would
be dumb enough to stand by their initial decision to fire Sherod.

10. That is amazing, if true...
..they won't reverse themselves because then it proves that they are a bunch of knee-jerking incompetents?

Wow. That is beyond pathetic.

were also handed a golden opportunity to expose Faux.

I have forgiven or turned away from many things about this administration that has disappointed me, but when it comes to the way they treated this wonderful lady, I don't think I can forgive.

edit to add - just for the record, I rec'd this thread.

17. What is the latest news?
I have very limited time to delve into all the details right now, but I read about it until late evening last night. Are there new facts since this OP?

21. Thanks
Let's hope this works out. I would like to see Obama address this personally, though, because FAUX news and that blogger will not stop until they are called out in the most high profile way possible.

22. I listened to Ms. Sherrod this morning on CNN...
and she was asked if she would consider going back if asked and she talked about how, at first, she wasn't sure at all but, after receiving calls from the President of the NAACP and others encouraging her to go back if asked as she could be of even greater help now to the USDA, she said she hadn't thought about it that way and seemed to be swaying toward going back if asked.

I was even more impressed by her than I was before watching her (and I was pretty damn impressed before, lol).

20. The OP could come back an retract it, since they were so adamant about "reporting the latest"...
I know they have had ample time to do so.
