Obama handled this controversy well |
|
He and his administration made a mistake, they acknowledged it, and they made amends. The Sherrod controversy also has made it very clear how the right wing manipulates and edits the message to serve their purposes. I don't think we will see Obama fall for this again so soon.

1. He did, they did, and I imagine big lessons were learned. Also, |
|
do you remember when idiot son couldn't even recall any mistakes he ever made? The arrogance of that spoke volumes.

I was trying to imagine in what kind of lame way Bush would have handled this.

2. Best as humanly possible... |

We can't ask for more than that. There was a very long list of accomplishments for the week (so far) which speaks to his great sense of priority. No amount of loud-mouthed asshatery will divert his attention from what is best for ALL Americans.
Good OP... K&R.

3. yeah, after totally fucking it up they recovered |

but lost a huge opportunity to make this entirely about the hate-filled crapfest from the rightwing media. Instead it became all about how well they handled their own fuck up. So I guess it depends on exactly what you mean by 'this controversy'.

4. I think they are losing a huge opportunity to reinstate the |

Fairness Doctrine. News should never be "made up" for entertainment purposes or, as in this case, for destroying anyone's life. I don't expect bloggers to follow rules, but I sure as Hell do expect the News Depts of ANY major network to do so. We had rules and regulations years ago and we should have them again. If someone in Wash DC doesn't push for this, then there is no hope and there will be no change.

12. freedom of the press kind of stands against that principle |
|
Just saying. Thought and expression must always be free otherwise the fascists will bludgeon us with it when they are in control.

18. Thought and expression is one thing... "news" is another category altogether. |
|
And it should follow some rules... like truthful reporting rather than pulling shit out of their asses and passing it off as news.

7. The point is that the narrative is about how the admin screwed up |
|
behind that is what they screwed up and why, but the main subject is 'the administration screwed up'.
The main subject could have been: fox news caught lying while trying to wreck Ms. Sherrod's career. But it isn't, that is just part of the back story.

onto others is political suicide. No one likes it when the entire blame of a bad situation is pawned off. I think there has been some pretty impressive headlights shone onto the series of events that lead to the Whitehouse trying to remedy the situation.
Fox news got their black eye from this skirmish. Seems like their talking heads have been laying low lately and playing it 'safe' with blah blah rhetoric.

because it's going to be on Beck, Fox, Breitbart or any other right wing source till it's thoroughly proven. If the White House paid half as much attention to Obama's original base as they do Beck etc. We might actually get something accomplished.

11. I agree--except I don't think getting Sherrod to resign BEFORE Fox |
|
"News's" Beck and Hannity could demand on air that Sherrod be fired was a "mistake". Had their most rabid spokesmen been able to demand the head of their fantasied "reverse racist", would Fox EVER have recognized the omitted context that make Breitbart's Sherrod clips Orwellian falsehoods? I'm pretty certain the answer is NO.
Has Fox ever admitted there was anything wrong with Breitbart's ACORN pimp/'ho clips, the ones they ran hundreds of times and still run regularly? Had Vilsack not acted so quickly, IMO the highly selective and Orwellian clips of Sherrod now would be in just the first phase of similar treatment. The truth is irrelevant to Fox's deliberately false and divisive racialist programming.
Whether or not Sherrod had resigned after Fox would have demanded that she be fired, the deliberately misleading and false Sherrod clips today would be in just the first week of a very long run. Either right-wing-noise-machine demands for her firing would be getting more and more shrill by the hour, or Fox would be taking the first few dozens of hundreds of victery laps, running the same Orwellian clips over and over and over again for months.
But because Vilsack acted so quickly, Fox was denied its Big Lie opportunity this time. And Vilsack was able to undo quickly what he had done in so much haste, while drawing media attention to the REAL racism at USDA: generations of denying help to Black farmers, whose ranks have declined by hundreds of thousands, to just 33,000 nationwide today.

It was the perfect storm..this has got to be intense..not only falling for a faux edit but deeply hurting one of our own. I kept thinking during the bleakest moments that this could turn out to be a valuble teaching lesson and I couldn't be more grateful right now.

20. There's more than one Vilsack? |
|
Obama called Sherrod and apologized and asked her to come back. He didn't fire her. Neither did his Administration. Vilsack fired her.
I hope Vilsack has been put on notice.
