Obama halt to Yucca Mountain nuclear waste site slammed

By James Rosen | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — Congress was warned Tuesday that the failure to build the planned Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada could delay licensing of the country's first new nuclear power plants in a generation.

"Without a solution to the storage of spent nuclear fuel — meaning a permanent repository — state regulators may be hesitant to approve the construction of new nuclear units," David Wright, the head of the Nuclear Waste Strategy Coalition, a group of regulators, attorneys general and electric utilities from 32 states, told the House Budget Committee. "And utilities may be hesitant to construct new nuclear units even if the (federal) Nuclear Regulatory Commission approves the license."

Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C., the House panel's chairman, criticized President Barack Obama's decision last year to halt plans to start building the nuclear waste dump beneath Yucca Mountain, about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

"I am doubtful that there are easy alternatives to the Yucca Mountain site," Spratt said. "If we abandon Yucca Mountain, where are we going to find a suitable alternative?"

At Obama's direction, Chu set up the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Energy Future in January. The panel, led by former Indiana Rep. Lee Hamilton and former national security adviser Brent Scowcroft, will seek alternatives to Yucca Mountain for nuclear waste disposal.

2. And where do you live
in Las Vegas? Here in Nye County, where the site would have been located, we lost hundreds of good paying jobs because of Harry Reid which is why he is very unpopular in the rural parts of NV. the state also lost 10 billion a year because of that asshole. My little town of Pahrump could have really used the revenue from the site to bolster the Fire Dept and Sheriff's Dept. and bring in more jobs and infrastructure but because the whiny little babies of Las Vegas saying no nuclear dump site, which wasn't even it their county, we get fucked again by sir harry.

4. Oh, so you're one of those expendable people.
There are good reasons why they want to locate the facility in a sparsely populated area. It reduces the number of potential casualties.

How many new jobs will be worth it to become the nation's toxic dumping ground? How many threats to the public does their have to be before the number of new jobs aren't worth it anymore?

Why not build a solar facility instead?

6. You have posted this dreck before, but still don't acknowledge that
the "whiney little babies of Las Vegas" are as close to Yucca Mountain as Parumph. In the event of an accident, do you really think that nuclear waste is going to stop and say, "Oh no, we can't cross the county line!"?

And yes, we are well aware that rural areas of Nevada choose to vote for Republicans.

3. Another reason that nuclear isn't a serious solution to our energy problems.
And Obama knows it. New nuclear will be very limited and its capacity won't likely be enough to compensate for aging plants being taken offline in the near future. The only question is how much will be wasted on subsidies to placate the industry.
