How did the messaging succeed in CA and NY when it failed elsewhere? |

races across the State. It was far from a "done deal" early on. Many here in CA were saying "Where the hell is Brown?" Turns out he called it right on this one, came in late and strong, after Whitman had stumbled more than once. Then demolished her campaign in the debates.

17. The GOP selected some bad candidates |
|
Campbell would have done better than Fiorina against Boxer in the Bay Area (he was one of the Congress people from here a while back, and has a reputation as being a moderate; switch a small percentage of the votes in the highly populated areas and Boxer doesn't look as strong). Whitman plain out annoyed people with her It's my money and I'll throw it around if I want to attitude. Plus, after the primary campaign she ran against Poizner (whom I used to have a modicum of respect for, not anymore) she essentially made sure Brown was going to win.
As for New York, I spent a few weeks in "Carl Country" last month and the guy's a dangerous nutcase and loose cannon. Shumer and Gillibrand seemed to be running unopposed given by how much presence they had.

in hiding. They won all the races.
I did not get to see the ads in NYstate, but would assume it is the same thing.
In NH, Hodes ran as a Republican and got clobbered. People voted for the Republican.
Of course, the NE is liberal, but we can elect our Republicans once in a while (See Scott Brown), particularly when the messaging sucks.
