Obama confident of tax cut deal before Jan. 1

Obama confident of tax cut deal before Jan. 1

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Saturday that he's ready "to roll up my sleeves" and work with congressional leaders on a tax cut deal before rates are set to rise on Jan. 1.

<..>

"We need to get this resolved and I'm confident we can do it," he said. He said he'd work through the weekend and into next week to find a compromise.

Obama said lawmakers must give the American people "the peace of mind that their taxes will not go up" come the new year. He said that will require compromise by both sides.

<...>

Obama repeated his position that it didn't make sense to extend tax cuts for the wealthy — individuals with incomes over $200,000 and couples over $250,000.

4. But the very word "compromise" sets off alarms. Our and their idea of compromise
is not even in the same galaxy. I feel pretty strongly about not extending cuts to the upper 2%, and the Senate rejected the $1 million"compromise" today. I'm crossing my fingers and holding my breath.

7. If they can get the unemployment extended then I don't care what
they compromise on the tax cuts for an equal amount of time. This country can't allow 2 million people to be destroyed for the posturing of the repubs.

2. If it doesn't make sense to extend tax cuts to the wealthy
How does it follow that a "temporary extension of all tax cuts is emerging as a likely compromise," in this report and everywhere else you turn?

5. Because it's all theater...
Everything your watching, the House votes, the Senate voters, all of it theater to placate the base. None of it is real.

3. I will wholeheartedly support him signing an extension of lower and middle tax bracket rates
and I will wholeheartedly support a veto of anything that extends rates, temporarily or otherwise, for the upper brackets.
Anything else I will wholeheartedly and actively oppose.

6. This is part of the problem.
Instead of talking about compromise Dems should trumpeting the fact that the repubs just blocked middle class tax cuts. Losing the battle of the message.

9. Exactly - for days and days, Dems should be trumpeting that ugly fact!
Instead, the WH sends yet another signal that Republicans will ultimately get their way.

10. It's in the article
just not the snip

The president said in remarks after commenting on a newly sealed free trade pact with South Korea that he wasn't happy that Senate Republicans earlier Saturday blocked legislation that would have extended tax cuts for the middle-class permanently while letting tax cuts for the wealthy expire.

But Obama told reporters, "With so much at stake, today's votes cannot be the end of the discussion."

And other Democrats are making the case.

11. There should be no discussion, unless your going to compromise.

13. He is going to compromise
so there will be a discussion. That is not a surprise. The details of the compromise are still unknown.

14. I am confidant that there will be a deal as well
And I am confidant that the deal will extend the tax cuts for the most wealthy.
