1. This deal has nothing for the 99ers...
...as best I can tell.

There is a 13 month UI extension, but it still caps out at 99 weeks.

Honestly, there is no hope for the 99ers at all. Most Democrats are not even prepared to fight to extend unemployment benefits out past 99 weeks, and with the GOP taking over the House and increasingly their numbers in the Senate, well, nothing is going to be done to help this growing group of people.

4. I don't know, but remember a talk show host from a long time ago
who said there's always something you can do to make money. He listed things he did when he was unemployed andhad no incoe. Cleaning guttrs, mowing awns, hauling away trash, taking people shopping, cleaning out attics, etc. I heard a caller on Norm Goldman's show, last thur or fri I think, who said similar things. He had een a well aid IT guy and was laid off over a year ago. There are no it jobs that he can find, even outside of his home area, so he resorted to doing services or people who don't want to do, or can't do. He said he was surviving financially, but when Norm asked him what it like for him he said "IT SUCKS, Norm!" but he's doing what he has to do until things get better. I'm sorry to say, but I think that's the only answer for the 99ers for now.

7. Those only work when OTHER working people still have money.
Once the economy is well and truly sacked the best you can hope for is a free meal for your labor.

9. I don't know whre you live, but not even a mile from our house
there are lots of people & neighborhoods with lots of money & hate doing menal jobs. We are both retired & live on SS but I guarantee you I would have gladly paid someone to clean the leaves out f our gutters or put up our Christmas lights and not have to worry about my husband cimbing a ladder. I'd love for someone to take me shopping once in a while. Believe me, there are lots of seniors in the position we're in. Yu don't have to be wealthy to be able to afford $25 or $50 for some jobs yu can't do anymore.

12. My neck of the woods is pretty hard hit. Lots of people are tightening their budget.
And it's still early days, sorry to say.

16. Why do you think those who can afford or who need do not
already have such services in place? I can not do much of that, and others do. Lawn service, handyman, repair people, I'd have to make things up to give work to new comers. I can not afford that.
I'm sure those neighborhoods you see have those services in place as well. Most nice neighborhoods, for example, use bonded lawn people and repair people, they are not really interested in strangers at the door. Gardening work is not the realm of teenagers anymore it is landscape services, small and large.
The idea that those who need help do not already have help is sort of strange. There is no labor shortage.

8. I get what you are saying, but what happens
when you have a couple of hundred people in one area "cleaning gutters, moving lawns, hauling trash"? I'll mow your lawn for $10.00, no wait, I will do it for $8.00, no wait, I'll do it for $6.00.

The (remaining) middle class better had face the fact that there is a whole class of skilled, educated workers who will be willing to do "your" job for less. For less money, less benefits and longer hours. And unless they face up to that fact, and lobby for more jobs, for everyone, they better start expecting that. Sorry to say.

3. Are we sure?
Sources tell ABC News that the president pushed for several items in the deal, including a 13-month extension of unemployment benefits beyond the current limit of 99 weeks.

11. Yes, it is true. Though if it didn't pass, we'd be talking about the 26ers for the next few years
since that would have been the new cutoff point for benefits.

13. well it keeps 99ers in existence
If you're wondering if the unemployment benefits extend beyond 99 weeks because of the deal, nope... That's something that just isn't politically feasible.

14. What a disgrace
Edited on Tue Dec-07-10 02:29 AM by jeanpalmer
tax cuts for the rich but no help for the long-term unemployed. His priorities are screwed up. He caved without a fight when he had the upper hand.

15. Ed doesn't care about them. He wanted to allow all employment benefits to expire
just to shove it up the GOP's ass.
