Pawleys Island resident seeks seat in Congress
Dick Withington, a former Navy officer and retired accountant living in Horry County, said Friday he will seek the Democratic nomination for the 1st Congressional District seat.

If elected, he said he would work across party lines and try to end the United States' involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I'm interested in seeing this militarism get ratcheted back down," he said.

Withington ran for South Carolina's District 106 House seat in 2004 and lost. He ran as a last-minute substitute for a Democrat who had to exit the race.

Withington said he likes his chances this time around and will campaign hard between now and the June primary. "The time is good for me," he said.

"The Republicans are in disarray, and there's a softening of the anti-Democratic mood out there."

Withington, 66, retired from his job as a partner in a corporate tax consulting firm and moved from Atlanta to Pawleys Island in 2001.
