At the Senate swearing-in, it was the Joe Biden ShowBy Holly Bailey
While most of the political world was focused on House Speaker John Boehner's inaugural speech this afternoon, Vice President Joe Biden was hamming it up in the chamber next door, swearing in newly elected and returning senators.
Throughout the afternoon, Biden teased little kids ("No dates until you're thirty," he told Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski's niece), complimented wives ("You married up, man," he told GOP Sen. John Thune) and praised parents ("You did something really right," he told GOP Sen. Marco Rubio's mom).
The vice president spent several minutes talking to tea party favorite Rand Paul, the newly elected senator from Kentucky, telling him about the day he was sworn into the Senate. "I admire you, I really do," Biden told him at one point, patting Paul on the back.
When Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski arrived to be sworn in, Biden gave her a long hug and posed for several pictures with her and her family, including her father, onetime Sen. Frank Murkowski, whom the veep promptly invited over for dinner. "I will, I will," the former Alaska senator said.
Biden happily posed with a T-shirt Murkowski gave him promoting her successful write-in campaign for Senate, which spelled her name using illustrations of a cow and skis. "I knew how to spell the name to begin with," he declared, holding the shirt up.
