Krauthammer (of all people) made a great point.
He pointed out that the US is rare in that the Head of State and the Head of Government are the same person. For the first 2 years of his term, Obama has been seen as a man grappling with governmental issues. Tonight, he was speaking as the leader of all the American people. Krauthammer went on to remind us that Reagan increased his rapport with voters with his talks at the Challenger disaster and the D-Day Remembrance. Clinton turned his presidency around speaking to the nation about Oklahoma City. Tonight was Obama's opportunity to speak directly to the country, uncut and unfiltered on a matter of significance with all of the networks covering it. And President Obama was masterful.Tonight was a very important night.

3. And by celebrating the lives of the slain and
detailing the heroism of the ordinary citizens who risked their lives, he moved the focus from the depravity of one individual to the basic goodness and courage of so many others.

7. Even if no one including the President wanted it this way,
this is a big, free political opportunity and there's nothing the opposition can do about it. That's the crass reality.
