Free Republic comments on McCain's positive assessment of Obama's Tucson speech
I thought I'd head to the swamp and see what I feel would be the obvious. Just to illustrate McCain's comments on the Tucson speech, McCain wrote in the Washington Post:

President Obama gave a terrific speech Wednesday night. He movingly mourned and honored the victims of Saturday's senseless atrocity outside Tucson, comforted and inspired the country, and encouraged those of us who have the privilege of serving America. He encouraged every American who participates in our political debates - whether we are on the left or right or in the media - to aspire to a more generous appreciation of one another and a more modest one of ourselves.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/14/AR2011011403871.html

So what does that comment mean to some people? Here are some choice examples among many more from our friends at Free Republic:

"McCain is just trying to diminish support for zero amongst democrats."

"McCain did enough damage by running against Obama in the presidential election. He needs to shut up and stop helping."

"McCain cut short his congressional delegation trip to South America to attend the ceremony.
Now there's a motive. Maybe there's a South American connection to the shooter. Anybody looking into that? "

"To all the people in Arizona who voted for Mc Nuts; SUCKEEEERRRRS!"

"Just one more step for Juan away from his harsh campaign year rhetoric, now that he’s hoodwinked his way to another six years in the Senate. Here we see the old Juan, back to supporting comity and harmony among the various political factions, and getting ready to stab conservatives in the back at the next opportunity."

"That sick old guy never stops the Azz Kissing of our mortal Enemy!"

"McCain was reprogrammed at the Hanoi Hilton. Why else would he be such a big defender of a commie trying to single-handedly destroy this nation?"

"The happy nimrod leftist useful idiot, busy bilking Americans of their hard-won freedoms, while keeping a mental-retardation smile on his face all the while. "

"Echo’s of Neville Chamberlin"

"I’ve been hearing the same drivel on Fox News from people as diverse in opinion as Juan Williams and Rick Santorum. The only person I’ve heard call it crap was Laura Ingrahm. I don’t know what they put in the water at FNC."

Apparently, giving Obama praise for a speech that even many hard-core conservatives found moving is just too much for these people inflicted with paranoia, conspiracy theories and variations of Obama Derangement Syndrome.

These people are lost.

1. it's sad
I'm not a f***ing robot - I give kudos where kudos is due - for example, I cannot stand McCain but I think he responded nicely to Obama's speech. There's too many political robots - certainly at the freak republic, but alas there is a fair amount of them here on DU too

2. pitiful
"mortal enemy."

The idea of working with others and communicating and sharing ideas and finding compromises isn't within their reach.

3. Fox created these monsters and fed them a steady diet of garbage. It can be no
surprise that the monsters have rebelled against their makers.

14. Freepers predate FOX News by dozen years or more
These religious bigots have been spouting off long before
Fox News became no. 1 in cable.

4. That bit about the South American connection tells you everything you need to know about them
These people scare me, especially since I suspect each and every one of them is armed more heavily than some small countries.

Still, McCain foisted Palin upon the rest of America and I will never forgive him for that.

6. Maybe Laura Ingraham can look into the "South American" connection
She and Ann Coulter could team up and find "the story". Megan Kelly is ready to read the story with wild abandon.

9. Maybe it's a fluke
but comity is an actual word - basically means social harmony, so it was a bit repetitive in his sentence, still, credit to him for knowing such an "unusual" word :D

11. I am no McCain fan - not at all.
He should have attended the ceremony - AZ is his state, after all. But for having the grace to say good things about President Obama's speech - which warranted them - I truly commend him.

13. He did attend, so did Kyle.
I don't like either of them, but they did the right thing by going to the ceremony.

16. I'm sorry - I didn't mean to imply that he didn't attend -
I know that he was there. But on re-reading my comment, I see how one could have gotten that impression. Thanks for the catch.
What I meant was that, as AZ's Senators, it was practically an obligation for him (and Kyl) to attend, so there was no question of his dodging the ceremony like Boehner did. Btw, I believe that Boehner, as Speaker, had an obligation to attend as well. As usual, Boehner never fails to disappoint.
But McCain also went the extra mile, so to speak, by praising the President's speech. He didn't have to do that and for that, I do commend him.

17. Boner is another story altogether. His failure to attend was a huge faux pas.
But he's about as clueless and graceless a character as you can imagine. He actually made McCain look like a class act.

I suspect McCain is trying to redeem what's left of his reputation. It's pretty clear that the Freeper crowd never liked him much in the first place, and his bizarre choice of Palin as his running mate was a pathetic attempt to pander to the lunatic fringe. That, of course, put his whole campaign in the Epic Fail column. It has certainly dawned on him that his shameless and cynical campaign pretty much destroyed his reputation as a principled maverick (which he never was, really), and now he's trying to put Palin's craziness behind him. His editorial was good, and appropriate, but McCain will never get that old (and probably undeserved) reputation back.

12. There was nothing special about the speech. It was appropriate, that's it.

Best line in the speech... "We may not be able to stop all evil in the world, but I know that how we treat one another, that's entirely up to us."

Not much else worth repeating.

What he said about looking at democracy and the country through the eyes of a child, that's important. I always said take a 3 year old George W. Bush and put him in a room with a 3 year old Osama bin Laden, and they will gravitate to each other and start playing...until their ignorant parents rush in and tell them they don't associate with those people

Einstein once said, "Common sense is a collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen" .

Adults are the problem with the world. Excuse me..."grown people" are the problem.

about living up to the girl who got killed - her expecations was the best line. To each his/her own. I thought it was a terrific speech.
