Poll: Corker Safe For Reelection Unless Dems Nominate Bredesen
Despite a middling approval rating, Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) could easily win reelection in 2012 against a slate of Democratic challengers -- that is, unless popular former governor Phil Bredesen (D) runs against him.

In a new PPP poll, Corker fends off several Democratic candidates, but trails Bredesen by five points, 46% to 41%. None of the other Democratic challengers even came close in the poll.

Corker led Rep. Jim Cooper 50% to 32%; topped former Rep. Bart Gordon 52% to 29%; and bested former Rep. Harold Ford Jr. 55% to 32%. And in two bonus fantasy match-ups, Corker led former Tennessee Senator and Vice President Al Gore 53% to 38%, and beat country singer Tim McGraw 50% to 28%.

Bredesen left office this year afters erving two terms as governor and remains extremely popular in the state. In the poll, 63% of respondents had a favorable opinion of Bredesen, versus 19% who viewed him unfavorably.

1. I'm not surprised by this
Corker, despite not really DOING anything, will garner plenty of support from the significant base of Republicans in the state. Bredesen, on the other hand, has widespread support from both sides of the aisle. Frankly, none of the other Democrats in the state get anywhere near the support Bredesen does. We are headed towards becoming a solid red state with only a few small pockets of blue (notably Nashville and Memphis, but not much else). Bredesen, while a Dem, is very centrist fiscally, and would fit right in with the other blue dogs in Washington.

And for those unfamiliar with him, he started (and made a ton of money from) HCA.

3. Isn't that awesome?
Couple this with the fact that the Democratic Ntl. convention will be one state over, would be a huge upset. (Some here would spend most of their time decrying Bredesen and a centrist sell out, but those of us who'd actually be represented by him well .... like water in the desert.)
