Poll question: Do you think Obama's new stand on DOMA signals that he's ready to fight the right? |

Do you think Obama's new stand on DOMA signals that he's ready to fight the right rather than keep pushing the idea of bipartisanship?

1. Um. No. I think he's scared that the base is fleeing and he has to do something. |
|
Can't help the teachers because he's a Charter pioneer. Won't end the wars, probably doesn't even have the power to do that. Time, thankfully, to pull support from the gaybashing.

4. Really...that's a pretty poor move to make. |
|
Not only are Repubs against gay marriage, I think you'll find a good number of Dems against gay marriage as well. Add them together I think they would rock the boat of dems. DADT okay, gay marriage...uh no. I find this argument weak.

10. Evidence the base is fleeing? |
|

Because I've not seen any indication that he's losing his base.
Why does everything have to be political? Can't Pres. Obama do something right without a ulterior motive?

Did you know he puts his RIGHT shoe on first? What does that tell you? I also heard somewhere that he only pretends to be left handed to gain our trust.

3. fight the way some want him to fight which may end up with no solutions or |
|
fight in a different way than we have seen before which may actually end up with legislation being passed that moves the ball down the field?
I'll take the latter because it is more meaningful in the long run.

5. He did it based on cases before the Justice Department and arguments they had to make to the Court |
|
regarding which test Courts should apply to discrimination based on sexual orientation.
It really was a true legal question.

11. What's the obsession with "fighting" all the time? |
|
Everybody's always itching for a "fight." We talk about "fighters" all the time here. It's the American penchant for macho violence, I guess.
I was attracted to Obama precisely because he is not a fighter. He's a thinker and a doer. Aside from his basketball passion, he's not "that" kind of guy. I guess it may stem from being raised predominantly by women. I married a guy like that: a thinker and doer, not a fighter.
So no, I don't think Obama's going to "fight" the right. He is going to continue doing what he has always done: work hard to accomplish things when he thinks they are (a) right and (b) achievable. He's not going to just throw his weight around for the purpose of pissing on a Republican.
Obama said from the beginning that he believed DOMA was wrong. I have come to believe that he tries to keep his promise, whenever it is possible, on each of these issues he presented during the election. In his own way, in his own time, so that they work: not just to throw around some tough-guy stance.
To everything, turn, turn, turn. There is a season, turn, turn, turn ...
P.S. I am extremely happy about the developments regarding DOMA today.
