Teabagger House leaders blink first, now open to budget deal w/Obama & Dems to avoid gov't. shutdown
Edited on Tue Mar-29-11 10:34 PM by ClarkUSA
Unable to find consensus within their own ranks, House Republican leaders have begun courting moderate Democrats on a budget deal to avoid a government shutdown at the end of next week.

The basic outline would involve more than $30 billion in cuts for the 2011 spending package, well short of the $61 billion initially demanded by Republican freshmen and other conservatives, according to senior aides in both parties. Such a deal probably would be acceptable to Senate leaders and President Obama as long as the House did not cut social and regulatory programs that Democrats support, Senate and administration aides said.

The fact that Republican leaders are turning to Democrats to pass a funding measure shows how divided the GOP caucus remains more than two months after taking over the House, as well as the difficulty that Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) has had in satisfying the demands of the 87 freshmen who came to Washington promising to cut the budget at all costs.

Boehner’s leadership team recognizes that any legislation that meets with approval from his most conservative flank — what Democrats call as the “perfectionist caucus” — would be dead on arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

It seems Republicans blinked first in the game of government shutdown chicken.

President Obama is a very savvy negotiator. He remained patient while Boehner & Co. huffed and puffed. Now it's Republicans who'll have to back off their demands: "Such a deal probably would be acceptable to Senate leaders and President Obama as long as the House did not cut social and regulatory programs that Democrats support, Senate and administration aides said."

5. I don't understand this reasoning. We do not have the House and the
only thing stopping the Republicans has been the Senate. Unless I am missing something there was going to be a
shut down if a compromise was not reached. Dems certainly did not cave and it is ridiculous to put that stamp on it. Save the criticism for s omething real like what is cut in the budget if a deal is reached.

9. WTF...where did you get this from the OP?
the article clearly states the "giving up" came fom the Reps, realizing it would get killed in the Democratically held Senate.

Is it opposite day and no one told me?

8. People use the term "Teabagger" too loosely
Boehner is no Teabagger, and neither is House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and nor was Bush. They are establishment hacks, neo-cons. Probably worse because they love war and police states.

Understood. Always the case. Instead of giving O time to get things done in the shit he's dealing with. People were running at the helm and saying Obama was a sell out. Seems not really the case.

13. To be fair, no one wins in this deal.
I don't blame the President for the utter shit this budget will be, because he's got a Republican House to get it through.

But it's going to screw a lot of people if it passes.

12. Oh REALLY now?
Sounds to me like certain teabaggers have realized that they'll be blamed for a government shutdown if it happens.

I really wish we could spend time figuring out what to FIX rather than haggling with Republicans over how much to cut. Fucking Republican House...

14. So instead of the Republicans having a steak and lobster dinner
They're only gonna have a steak dinner with garlic mashed potatoes if this deal goes through.

This is definitely some 3D hyper-dimensional chess shit.

15. Democrats are vegetarians though, so Republicans are going to be disappointed and will go hungry.

Just garlic mashed potatoes will be served by Pres. Obama and the Democratic Congress. Served on recycled paper plates.
