Xiaoqing Cao, a former biomedical cancer researcher at the University of California, is the new face of the UAW.

Cao, who spent nearly four years as a postdoctoral researcher, is now president of UAW Local 5810 in Berkeley, which now has 6,500 members and ratified its first contract last year.

The UAW helped postdoctoral researchers win annual wage increases, health care guarantees and a minimum salary of $37,740 -- a fact Cao said she believes will lead the UAW to win even more members in higher education.
