She's firing on all cylinders tonite.

I just wish the Democratic leadership would give a listen.

4. I was disappointed in the way she painted the Obama admin. as "changing their mind" on closing Gitmo
Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 09:29 PM by jenmito
as if Obama suddenly thought it was a good idea to try KSM at Gitmo. The fact is that AG Holder was clearly angry/disappointed that they HAD to try KSM at Gitmo because Congress refused to let the admin. try him in Federal court. He went so far as to reply to a reporter who asked if he feels he knows better better than the New Yorkers who didn't want KSM tried in NY, and he said YES, he DDES know better than them AND than those who flip-flopped on their support of having the trial in NY. He also said that he still wants Gitmo closed and won't give up trying to do so.

It was a shame that Rachel didn't portray it that way at all.

8. Thank you for your thoughts
To be honest, whether these people are tried on Gitmo is not one of one my own hot buttons. So I'll refrain from any comments on that

(although I do agree with her that the symbolism of doing that on the same day as his campaign announcement is unfortunate.)

12. Thanks for not slamming me for
giving my opinion. Jay Carney said that this wasn't Obama's choice, but that Holder gave him a "head's up." I think the timing was OK (or WOULD'VE been OK) if it had been portrayed honestly.

10. I agree 100%, jenmito, and tried to post this at her blog:
Rachel owed a discussion about rationale for Holder's Guantanamo decision. I hope she provides one in the future.

'Holder spoke with a tone of resignation, acknowledging that the administration’s hands had been effectively tied by members of Congress opposed to any transfer of Guantánamo detainees to the US.

“Sadly, this case has been marked by needless controversy since the beginning,” Holder said. “The prosecution of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his co-conspirators should never have been about settling ideological arguments or scoring political points.”'

13. Yeah...
what you posted is exactly right. Rachel knows better and should've done a better, more honest job reporting on it.

15. Right. She might have counted on Ed Show following hers,
but considering her statement, that's not enough. FIRST TIME disappointed in her.

18. I think Rachel was wrong in her portrayal
Obama and Holder were completely blocked by the GOP from moving Guantanamo prisoners.
I usually love her and never miss her show, but I was ticked off tonight. Obama didn't just campaign on closing Gitmo, he made an executive order on the first day. That was not grandstanding and empty promises. He meant it, but he was outmaneuvered.

7. At least Ed Schultz said Obama was FORCED to change their position on Gitmo.
It was good that Ed, unlike Rachel, showed part of AG Holder's press conference where he said he knows better than those who refused to let KSM be tried in NY.

9. You may be right on that....I honestly don't know
I do think, however, Maddow's comments were about the Institutional Democratic Party as much as Obama.

11. No reason for her to do Holder any favors at all.
This is his fault. He deserves the lack of attention.

14. It's not a "favor" to report on something accurately instead of putting a spin on it that
misrepresents what happened. It was the CONGRES'S and the NY politicians' fault-not his.

16. Wrong. Its Congress' fault.
Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 10:10 PM by elleng
'Holder spoke with a tone of resignation, acknowledging that the administration’s hands had been effectively tied by members of Congress opposed to any transfer of Guantánamo detainees to the US. . .

Holder said he studied other options, including conducting the trial at a federal prison outside New York City. But new restrictions by Congress made even that proposal a dead letter. . .

“While we will continue to seek to repeal those restrictions, we cannot allow a trial to be further delayed for the victims of the 9/11 attacks or their families,” he said. . .

Holder said he still believed the best venue for the 9/11 terror trial was a civilian federal courtroom. He said he stood by his earlier decision to conduct the trial in New York City.'
