Mother Jones' Kevin Drum: The Courageous, Serious, Gutsy Paul Ryan
The Courageous, Serious, Gutsy Paul Ryan
— By Kevin Drum| Mon Apr. 4, 2011 9:32 PM PDT

David Brooks on Paul Ryan's long-term budget proposal:

Today, Paul Ryan, the Republican chairman of the House Budget Committee, is scheduled to release the most comprehensive and most courageous budget reform proposal any of us have seen in our lifetimes....His proposal will set the standard of seriousness for anybody who wants to play in this discussion....This budget tackles just about every politically risky issue with brio and guts....Paul Ryan has grasped reality with both hands. He’s forcing everybody else to do the same.

Courageous. Serious. Gutsy. I imagine that within a few days this will be the consensus view of the entire Beltway punditocracy. A plan dedicated almost entirely to slashing social spending in a country that's already the stingiest spender in the developed world, while simultaneously cutting taxes on the rich in a country with the lowest tax rates in the developed world — well, what could be more serious than that?

I think I'm going to be sick. (Me, too.)

3. What's the difference between this David Brooks column and Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally?
Nobody wants what David Brooks is having.

4. Seriously,
"the most comprehensive and most courageous budget reform proposal any of us have seen in our lifetimes"

...what utter bullshit!

The first comment in response to Brooks:

..."His proposal will set the standard of seriousness for anybody who wants to play in this discussion. It will become the 2012 Republican platform, no matter who is the nominee."

Oh goodie! Another Republican program that cuts the bejezzus out of domestic spending, but completely neglects cutting defense spending! What the? I just cannot figure out why you seem completely unable to discuss, neigh to mention, our bloated, outrageous defense budget, Mr. Brooks. Are you allergic?

I am from Wisconsin, and I can tell you that support for Rep. Ryan is not as you would suggest. He is thought of (outside of his district) as an opportunist whose elevator does not go to the top floor--not at all as you have depicted him. Universe help us if Rep. Ryan and his ilk predominate. I am betting they will not. Though so much of the American public has overdosed on Kool-Aid, people in Wisconsin have HAD IT! And, after all that has happened with their crazy guvner, they get it. Ryan will most likely not be re-elected in 2012!

Will you really support any Republican, Mr. Brooks, no matter how immature and outlandish his/her ideas? Please just say "no!"
