and a glitch in the system (or a malicious troublemaker) causes all voting data to be completely wiped out on election day, and it is impossible to recover the data. What would happen?

They would give us whichever candidates they wanted to give us by whatever margins they thought would fool us.
They would send the fake results to the media, and pretend they were the real results.
They would never, ever admit that the results weren't real. And we would never know the difference.
