Obama to Offer Deficit-Cutting Plan as Fiscal Fight Broadens
By JACKIE CALMES
Published: April 10, 2011

In a speech to be delivered at a university here on Wednesday, Mr. Obama will in effect come off the sidelines on the debate over reducing the nation’s debt, which is reaching dangerous heights as the population ages.

After months of criticism that he has not led on budget talks, Mr. Obama will urge bipartisan negotiations toward a multiyear debt-reduction plan that adminstration officials said would depart sharply from the one proposed last week by Republicans.

The House Republican plan includes a shrinking of Medicare and Medicaid and trillions of dollars in tax cuts, while sparing defense spending. Mr. Obama, by contrast, envisions a more comprehensive plan that would include tax increases for the richest taxpayers, cuts to military spending, savings in Medicare and Medicaid, and unspecified changes to Social Security.

1. A 'bipartisan' bill that includes tax hikes for the rich?
Good luck with that.

3. A "bipartisan" bill that includes cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security?
Despite Cantor's declarations, Boehner and Obama still need Harry Reid to pass a bill.

16. It depends....
on if they love their rich outweighs their hatred of the old and poor. I'm sure if Obama added cuts to children, it would be a offer they couldn't refuse!!

It's sad that Obama has to make this kind of compromise. I get that the republican leadership is evil....but how is it that the republican people care more about the rich getting richer than old or poor people. Are none of them old or poor????

2. What, he's going to attempt to frame the debate NOW?
Too little, too late. The time to frame the budget debate was last December before he caved on the Bush tax giveaways to the 1%.

8. Way too little and way too late. I'm over Obama. I have no
confidence that he will lift a finger for any American other than a rich one.

23. Its up to him, not you. And considering he has gotten this far by his own bootstraps...
...and you are nothing more than anonymous person running your mouth on the internet, I'll go with his judgement on "when" over yours.

4. Very promising
This is what Obama needs to do. The only reason we have debt problems is because since Reagan, both parties have been pandering to the wealthy. They have made out terrifically under all our presidents since 1982. I think Obama should propose a tax hike on the wealthy that's large enough to lower the deficit and allow a tax cut for the middle class. Then, he's really screw the Republicans.

10. Is this the "change" he promised?
I like military cuts, those are overdue. I am not sure any tax increase will
create more jobs. When jobs increase tax revenues also increase automatically.

However, many people have managed to deny it.

11. As Far To The Right That The Repugs Plan Is - Obama Needs To Take His Plan.......
that far and even further to the left. Then let the negotiations start. If he doesn't take it to the far left - that means again we will start out weak. We will again have compromised without even the start of a negotiation.

However, every one calls him a failure when he compromises. Even if he fights each and every time.

18. I do not see this pack of angy, rabid, Tea Party Lunatics (tm) agreeing to any tax hikes.
Yes, I know, rolling back the tax cuts is NOT technically a tax increase, but I just do not see the Tea Party budging an inch. They obviously do not give a shit about the working poor and middle class.

They will not run a candidate against the Republican, you know. They have no national platform or convention you know, they are Republicans. Same as they ever were.

21. Focus should be solely on what created a 13-fold increase in national debt since the gipper foisted
his voodoo economics on America. Everyone knows the root causes and these root causes were implemented with malice of forethought imo for the purpose of gutting social security and Medicare. If BHO understands this, and he is mightily smart and knowledgeable, and proceeds with the gutting, yours truly will assume that was his intent from the git-go. Yours truly hopes he is wrong, but notwithstanding what's in his gut, the proof is always in the pudding. :patriot:

Oh Really?
Obama is finally going to get in the game?
Is this the "CHANGE" we've been waiting for?

Who will STAND and FIGHT for THIS American Majority?
Lofty Rhetoric, Broken Promises, and Whiny Excuses mean NOTHING now.

After 2 years I dont believe ANYTHING he says.

Now I only watch what he actually does.

Btw, this current Obama budget with all the cuts, it actually increases military spending.

29. Unspecified changes to Social Security...
Tax increases for the rich, cuts in military spending, and unspecified changes to Social Security...which of these is NOT a deal-breaker for the Republicans?

Remember the catfood commission? Get out your stainless steel underwear...
