Manning, Obama and U.S. moral leadership
Glenn Greenwald in Salon: <http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/story/index.html?story=/opinion/greenwald/2011/04/11/manning>

"On December 15, when I first reported the inhumane conditions of Bradley Manning's detention, I did not assign any blame to -- or even mention -- Barack Obama. Although, as Commander-in-Chief, Obama was technically responsible for Manning's treatment, there was no evidence that he even knew about it, let alone planned it. But since then, the Manning controversy exploded into national prominence and Obama has explicitly defended the treatment, leaving no doubt that it directly reflects on who he is as a leader and a person."

Why have we allowed our hearts to be come so hardened that we're ready to excuse any excess on the part of the President, as long as he's got the right letter after his name? When did this happen?

4. Yes, of course. In order to prevent suicide, we must humiliate, dehumanize,
definitely make sure that the possible suicide has no self esteem, has no control over anything in his life at all, that he has no outside human contact, that he is as miserable as it is humanly possible to be, and to make sure that he has absolutely no hope for the future what so ever.

Who would even want to think of suicide under those conditions?

The psychiatrists who have examined Manning have repeatedly said he is NOT a suicide risk.
