Poll: Americans Strongly Support Budget Deal, And Credit Dems For Averting Shutdown

Poll: Americans Strongly Support Budget Deal, And Credit Dems For Averting Shutdown

Jon Terbush

Nearly six in ten Americans approve of the eleventh hour budget deal struck between Congress and the White House to avert a government shutdown, according to a CNN poll released on Monday. And what's more, a plurality give Democrats the most credit for making it happen.

In the poll of American adults, 58% said they approved of the budget deal, compared to 38% who disapproved.

Additionally, the poll found that a 48% plurality of respondents credited Obama and Congressional Democrats the most for preventing a government shutdown. Thirty-five percent of respondents gave more credit to Republicans, while 11% thought both sides were equally responsible.

While majorities of both Democrats and independents support the compromise, a plurality of Republicans dislike it, with fully half of them saying that their party gave up too much ground on the deal.

Democrats supported the compromise by a 66%-28% split, while independents backed it 56%-39%. But among Republicans, 47% saw the deal as a good thing, while 49% gave it a thumbs down because they felt the party had gotten the short end of the stick. Exactly 50% of Republicans said the party's leaders had given up too much in the final deal.

3. What percentage could name the details of the deal?
0%.

Because it hasn't been inked.

Therefore, I call "bullshit," or, if you prefer, "meaningless."

10. Ask some of the people here who dislike the deal---name some of the details.
Additionally it doesn't matter does it? People don't vote on details as we can see. If they did Republicans would never be in office. But they always are---move on. Most voters are superficial voters.

17. You've just explained why the left's constant attacks on Obama
will lead to the GOP gaining more control.

Low information voters, Republican and Democrat hear the same messages, but only in sound bites. Not the details.

Fox news tells their viewers that Obama is bad, and that the GOP is good.

Much of the loudest voices on the left claim also claim that Obama is bad, and at times also mention that the GOP is a little worse.

Low info dems hear Obama bad, GOP bad. No reason to waste the energy to vote.

Low info Republican hear Obama bad, GOP good. And the low info Republican votes GOP.

Obama was supposed to sit the blue dogs down and explain to them how they were fucking everything up and that they needed to go along with the plan.

Like Ben Nelson was ever going to say "Ya know, you're right, I'm sorry."

I too, scratch my head a lot around here.

4. I'll take it!
Reminds me of the snap polls during the debates. The media tried to spin that Obama/Biden either lost or tied, but the snap polls proved otherwise. Seems like the media is going on and on about how Boner should get credit for balancing the nutjobs of the GOP, but people see it differently. Perception that Dems were the grownups in this situation can only help down the road.

5. Yesterday they came for Acorn and you did not help because you are willing to compromise.
Today they came for Planned Parenthood, and you did not help because you are willing to compromise. Tomorrow they will come for the unions, then Social Security, and Medicare, and you wont fight because you want to be reasonable.

Sooner or later we have to draw a line and stop compromising with the devil.

Now it looks like it is going to be Planned Parenthood. Who's next? Some Democrats in Congress are Democrats in name only. They dont support traditional Democratic values. You cant compromise with terrorists and that's exactly what Pres Obama is trying to do.

45. Yes. That's very difficult for some here on DU to understand. The way you deal with DLC
and Blue Dogs is to get them out of office. The good news is that they got their asses handed to them back in November.

Our job is to work to elect more progressive Democrats to office, especially at the grassroots level.

47. Doesn't mean that we can't try. What's happening in WI, OH, and IN is a testament to that.
We have to work harder. Find creative ways to get the message out. That's why the Republicans/Teabaggers are trying to destroy net neutrality.

48. Absolutely. We need a movement name and leader. We need goals, strategies and tactics.
The movement started by the demonstrations in WI can not be let to fizzle out. The movement needs a Facebook page or website keeping everyone up to date on all the activities nation wide. I think civil disobedience is in the cards for the near future. The corporate overlords will try to steal the next election and we should be ready.

Finding ways of getting our message out is most important. With a back up method for when the internet "goes down".

24. Look at the numbers for Independents. That, right there, is the problem.
Edited on Mon Apr-11-11 05:25 PM by Liberal_Stalwart71
DUers cannot seem to grasp the fact that Independents swing elections now. Democrats are ALWAYS expected to compromise because these so-called Independents are often very misinformed. Their behavior is not governed by facts and details. Their behavior is governed by soundbites and 30-second ads. The Democrats lost Independents in 2010 because the Democratic messaging was off, not to mention help from the Corporate Media, an impatient and irrational Democratic base, and Citizens United.

9. The American people seem to be drinking the Obama Kool-Aid. How do you feel about that DU?
Seriously...sometimes it feels there are more people against the President than there are people for the man. Especially when you come here---which is supposed to be a haven. ~sigh~ Although I do have to wonder about America sometimes. There are a lot of things we could have lost because of Repubs.

The mere fact that 35% of idiots gave more credit to Repubs freaks me out.

My only concern is that people don't give the Repubs credit for this---at all.

14. 824 is a reasonable sample as long as it was selected using good methodology
The size of the sample affects the margin of error. Here, the margin of error is such that you can comfortably make the inference that the op did. Have you ever taken even an introductory statistics class? You should have had a chapter on basic statistics even in your high school Algebra 2 class.

35. and there are cliches - and this is one
There is no reason to assume that the methodology was flawed. The fact is the statisticians who create these sampling plans are mathematicians - Their own reputations are important to them.

In fact, it is usually not the sampling design or the sample that produce biased results - it is more likely to be non- response (where the implicit assumption is that those not responding are like their peers who did) or the question being loaded in some way.

But - go ahead - be cynical and call the motivation of others into question because you do not like the results.

Edited on Mon Apr-11-11 04:35 PM by SpartanDem
you ever wonder why a poll have margin of error? A sample of 500--1000 is typical and that will get you a 3-4% error rate to get that down to 1% you'd need 10,000. It is is just not practical to do a poll of 10,000 people.

Even when they're not trying to force an answer they are so fucking shallow that the questions still evoke the same tired responses to the the horse race that were programmed into the sheeple by the M$M in the first place...

However (not to be inconsistent) the polling supports the fact that THIS is the kind of budget that people REALLY want...

Charlie, tell em' what they've won!

That's right Bob let's look behind door number two and see what we have for our contestants! Look at that Bob, we have deeper levels of poverty! Children without food. Seniors without heat! A shrinking middle class! Tax breaks for the wealthy! Corporate giveaways! Union Busting!

And for our Grand Prize let's look behind door number 3.

That's right folks behind Door number three are 5 of the biggest morons on the planet! Trump, Bachmann, Huckabee, Palin and Gingrich! What are they doing there? They are running for President! And standing behind them are an army of people screaming it's them or Obama!
