62. Hardly.. Sanders is a hard core populist progressive
Edited on Wed Apr-13-11 05:49 PM by hlthe2b
Weiner is a more pragmatic progressive, sometimes leftist and sometimes more centrist. So slam your head until you knock some sense in it. When it comes to protecting Medicare and SS, it is the Bernie Sanders and the Al Frankens that have been strongest on that issue. Weiner is a good guy with whom I agree on most issues. This isn't a knock on him.

How's that headache, now, eh?

He's this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O_GRkMZJn4

Now I might be prejudiced since Weiner is a fellow NYer, but he's as reliable if not more-so than Bernie Sanders.

67. Why, when we are discussing Weiner v Sanders...
do you think it germaine to bring up that Lieberman is 180 degrees to Weiner?

Kindly go re-read my posts. I have not suggested that I do not have tremendous respect/support for Weiner. We are comparing between two of the very best of liberal/progressives--not between a "liarman" and a true consistent progressive.

14. Had he let the tax cuts expire
Edited on Wed Apr-13-11 11:19 AM by ProSense
people would be complaining about their paychecks going down and blaming him for allowing Republicans to hold unemployment benefits hostage. Similar to how he's being blamed for having to deal with this situation after Congress failed to pass his 2011 budget.

That's right, had Congress passed the 2011 budget when Democrats were in the majority, the current actions to prevent a government shutdown would not be necessary.

7. Let's face it ...
... the horse is already out of the barn for Pres. Obama on much of this issue.

Starting from the appointments of Geithner and Summers and the reappointment of Bernanke through to the cave on extending the Bush tax cuts for the rich and last week's "compromise", well, he can speechify all he wants but much of his federal fiscal policy is a 'done deal'.

And really, if he argues now for raising taxes on the rich ... after last December ... that ought to go in the dictionary as a new definition for chutzpah.

24. You are looking at things in a very narrow minded fashion.
Edited on Wed Apr-13-11 11:53 AM by phleshdef
There is no rule that says a President can't compromise on something for what he or she perceives as a good reason with full intention of coming back to the fight he or she compromised on later. President Obama wanted to guarantee unemployment extensions for as many people as he could, he wanted middle class and lower class tax levels to change as little as possible. The wealthy should be taxed a lot more and they deserve to be taxed a lot more. But that effort should always take a back seat to middle class relief while unemployment is still hovering around 9%. If we were at 5 or 6%, then the fight would have been worth it. We weren't and aren't, so until that happens, people should not play games with raising taxes on the middle class or shorting out aid to the unemployed. Had the President and liberal Democrats not compromised with Republicans and blue dogs back last December, thats exactly what they would be guilty of.

There are more important things at risk here than having our ideological pleasure centers stimulated. This country and its economy are structured in such a way that certain things HAVE to be tended to to avoid some really undesirable consequences. The banking system has to be stable. The debt ceiling has to be high enough to give the government room to spend. And the federal government, ultimately, has to continue running. Any shutdown beyond a paltry amount of time would be devastating to an already fragile economy. These things, as far as "here and now", day to day life goes, are tremendously more important than getting your rocks off to the punishment of Wall Street. And thats not to say it doesn't deserve some punishment. Of course it does. Its largely why we are even having this conversation. But its not important enough to risk Republicans shooting the hostage.

Get unemployment down to healthy levels, get GDP growing at healthy levels, then we can play the game of "my values and ideology are bigger than yours". I'm all for it because I know ours (progressives) really is bigger than theirs and I'll celebrate the day we are able to fully whip it out and prove it. But like any responsible adult, we have to recognize when to keep it in our pants and keep the fundamentals of running the country in a stable place. Without a full progressive majority across the board, compromise will be necessary. We can't celebrate the balance of powers only when it benefits us.

for a vote by the entire house, then said the CBO would score a SP bill, nothing was ever published, but it sure did diminish the outcry to score a SP bill.

I called his office so many times they knew my voice, I asked to see what he sent to the CBO, they could not furnish the details and were rude "what does it mean to you?"

He can be a powerful voice ... if not a distraction.

I think the haters will be disappointed tonight.

Remember Obama Is running for reelection. There Is no way he Is going for more tax Cuts for the wealthy and cutting SS,Medicare, and
Medicaid like the commission wanted.Regardless this Is more likely to be the start of the 2012 campagin Instead of a propsoral for Congress since Republicans In the House will only vote on their plans.
